Movie Review Rewind: She’s Out of My League (2010)

Brandon Vick flips the calendar back to 2010 for a look at the R-rated romantic comedy She's Out of My League on this edition of Movie Review Rewind.

She’s Out Of My League is a rated R romantic-comedy. This means that the movie could use bad language and crude jokes, which it certainly does. However, it stays away from them for the most part and I kind of appreciated that. She’s Out Of My League keeps itself from falling in to a trap that other movies like this fall for. The trap that consists of a movie just wanting to gross you out and forgetting the story or it having a meaning. This movie has a heart and, more importantly, a decent meaning.

Kirk (Jay Baruchel) is an average guy who works at the airport, but really wants to be a pilot. But he has already ruled that out and has decided just to settle. No one around him believes in him or really supports him. His family treats his ex-girlfriend better than their own son. Kirk’s friends love him, but don’t give him much credit at all, especially when it comes to looks and girls. But when he meets Molly (Alice Eve), everyone changes on how the world sees him.

Kirk believes this is a fantasy come true. A beautiful, intelligent, and successful woman wants him. Of course, his family, ex-girlfriend, and buddies cannot believe it, either. And Kirk wants to prove everybody wrong and show that they belong together even if Kirk himself cannot convince himself of the same.

The movie has awkward situations and funny scenes. One scene to look for is when Kirk meets Molly’s parents for the first time. It’s almost worth the price admission alone. But I will remember this movie not for its humor but for its message. Everyone has issues with how they look and who they can be with or never have a chance with. There is this lack of confidence in people and Kirk has it. He definitely has self-esteem issues and the movie is really about him gaining confidence and believing in himself.

She’s Out Of My League is funny and tends to get better due to the charming chemistry between Baruchel and Eve, along with the meaning that no one is better than anyone else. The poster reads “How Can A 10 Go For a 5?”, yet the movie is a solid 7 out of 10.
