In case you haven’t noticed, we talk about movies an awful lot around these parts. In fact, I dare say we have more movie content on the site than anything other than football. During the early onset of the covid-19 pandemic, back when the streets were bare, and things were really locked down, the team got together and came up with a list of a bunch of random movies that you should take the opportunity to see if you hadn’t already. It was a way to add some entertainment to your quarantine, and we had a lot of fun that was much-needed at the time. I was thinking about doing this again some time soon – not sure why the idea popped back into my head, but I figured it’d be a fun bit to launch here on Patreon…just completely random movies that we love. Also, I have no idea where you can actually stream/watch these. That’s on you – otherwise, this would be one of those “what’s on Netflix this week” kind of articles…

Random Movie Journal, Vol. 4

The French Dispatch – Spoiler alert, a little birdie has told me that there will be a special edition of The Vick’s Flicks Podcast coming up next week on the career and filmography of Wes Anderson as we gear up for the release of Asteroid City next month. So, I dug into his filmography to catch up on some of the flicks I haven’t seen yet, starting with this one on HBO Max. I can see how some of his stuff can feel a little bloated and long-winded. But, I love it. I’m discovering that he just may be my favorite filmmaker. The French Dispatch was littered with fun performances, as Anderson’s work usually is. But, it was Benicio del Toro who stole the show for me. This one resonated with me as a guy who likes the art of writing, and appreciated the nod to Big J journalism.

The Grand Budapest Hotel – Another of Anderson’s that I wanted to mention because it is so much more fast-paced. This is the one I’d point to and say “if you don’t like this, then I think you probably just don’t like Wes Anderson.” It definitely has that artsy quality to it, but the story twists and unfolds. Ralph Fiennes is simply spectacular.

Spring Breakers – I always love a good festive film to get me in the spirit of the season. What’s more fitting in the spring time than a movie about Spring Break?!?! James Franco may be a creep in real life, and it’s this movie that will make the light bulb go off in your head about him. An A24 flick that is pulpy, amusing, and raw, Spring Breakers feels like someone gave Tarantino the reins to MTV’s Spring Break.

High Life – People approaching a black hole at the outer reaches of space, and dealing with just how shitty other people can be…yeah, it’s not exactly an uplifting watch here. I found it rather difficult to get through. But, I’ve been on a Robert Pattinson kick (there’s a Movie Review Rewind Podcast episode on Good Time dropping in July), and if you still think of him as the Twilight guy, I’d recommend firing this one up and seeing what acting chops this man really has.

King Arthur – This retelling of the legendary tale of King Arthur is as hokey as you’d imagine when you see it was released in 2004 and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. But, with Clive Owen and Keira Knightley involved, it’s a nice bit of nostalgia for a guy who was a teenager when it was released. Movies like this tend to get laughed at today, but at the time, it was a fun reason to get the crew together and go to the movies. We talk about the cheesy superhero movies of the era, but let’s not lose sight of this one.

If you check any of these out this weekend, be sure to let me know what you think!
