It’s hard to believe that more than half of 2023 is already in the books. As has become tradition here on The Vick’s Flicks Podcast at this time of year, our resident film critic Brandon Vick and I got together to review the year that has been so far. This year, we called in the heavy too. The EIC of 615 Film and President of the Music City Film Critics Association, Sean Atkins, joined us to weigh in on the year in film to this point. Here’s how I’ve scored ’em so far.
My Five Favorite Movies of 2023 So Far
5. Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol., 3 – Brandon’s review – A fitting, emotional end to the MCU’s greatest trilogy.
4. Cocaine Bear – Brittany’s review – One of the biggest surprises at the movies in a long time. Elizabeth Banks created her masterpiece in my book – funny, offbeat, wild, unhinged, and a damn good time.
3. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse – I’m going to paraphrase my buddy Easton Freeze on this one: “you could freeze this movie at any moment, frame the shot, and hang it on the wall as art.”
2. Air – Just…tremendous performances from Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and really, everyone in this movie. It was a simple story about one of the most popular athletes and popular products in American history, but the acting in it made it riveting.
1. Asteroid City – full review – “It’s art, baby – celebrating a little bit of everything from color to the written word to that profound feeling that good art gives you. I can’t wait to watch it again and write 1700 more words on it.“
