Names I’m Happy to See Popping Up from Titans Training Camp

Every summer, there's always a guy or two who shows up and surprises...

Training camp is underway for the Tennessee Titans, and this may come as a total shock to you guys, but I actually don’t have a press pass to attend practices. You would think from all these years of professional journalism on SoBros Network that that wouldn’t be the case (in all seriousness, I’ve just never asked despite having a few people reach out and offer to help – I’m just working a bit here, y’all…thanks for thinking of me). So, like most of you guys reading this piece, I get my camp updates by obsessively scrolling and refreshing the feeds of several members of the Titans media.

In doing so, I’ve seen a few names pop up this week that have me stoked. And, we’re talkin’ the deeper cuts this morning. No one is going to be psyched to see Ryan Tannehill having a good camp, y’know? That is to be expected. No one is going to be surprised that Jeffery Simmons is looking good. It’s not like anyone’s pushing for Derrick Henry‘s job. No, I’m talking about some guys on the back end of the roster who could be vying for a spot on the final 53…guys that could have an impact on this year’s team as it searches for valuable depth at multiple positions.

EDGE Caleb Murphy – Like many other positions, the Titans are on thin ice when it comes to depth among the edge rushers. Arden Key is balling out. Harold Landry is back and healthy. Rashad Weaver figures to see an expanded role, but the Titans need a 4th guy who can be reliable when called upon to really crank the rotation up. The defensive front is going to be the strength of this team and the Titans need it to be effective to help mask their issues in the secondary, too. That’s why I’m stoked to see that the Titans might have hit on UDFA Caleb Murphy out of Ferris State. I’ll be honest with you guys – I haven’t watched a lot of Murphy’s tape. He struck me as “just a guy” back in the spring, so I put him on my “just guys” list and moved on to the next prospect. He had a prolific career in college, and it sounds like he’s making some noise in camp. I would love to be proven wrong on this one. Per Turron Davenport: “Good rush by Caleb Murphy vs. Jayln Duncan. Used two hand swipe to get around Duncan and force Will Levis to rush his throw to Chris Moore that fell incomplete.

WR Reggie Roberson – I’ve been preaching patience with the pass-catching group for quite some time, even before the team signed DeAndre Hopkins. I’m a believer in Treylon Burks. I love the potential that Kyle Philips possesses, and I’m happy to see Chris Moore is out there making plays too. But, you can’t have too many good receivers. I don’t know how many the Titans will actually keep because it seems as though they have some options beyond that WR4 spot, but to see Roberson emerge as an option down the field is encouraging. I swear on one of those catches, the man had five yards worth of separation. Roberson also offers value as a returner. This receiving corps can still use some pure speed. Per Sam Phalen: “#Titans WR ReggieRoberson Jr. has had a really nice afternoon. I count at least 3-4 big catches during team period.

TE Alize Mack – I want to credit Mike Herndon for this idea because I could’ve sworn I heard him say it on last week’s Football & Other F Words, but I’m not doing that much work. Besides, I just want to give Mike credit for everything because Mike is awesome (apologies to whoever said this if it’s not Mike). Anyway, the idea being that if Chig Okonkwo goes down for any reason, the Titans don’t currently have a guy on the roster who can even remotely replicate what he does. Trevon Wesco is primarily a blocking tight end. Josh Whyle, who just got on the field a couple of days ago for the first time, is more of a jack-of-all-trades type of tight end. But, the Titans don’t have another dynamic guy who can create explosives at the position, so it would be nice for a guy to step up and offer at least some semblance of that play-making potential. Per Easton Freeze: “Another really nice play from my favorite sleeper #Titans TE to make the roster, Alizé Mack. Wide open across the middle of the field, Malik Willis finds him for the long catch and run.

OT John Ojukwu – Listen, I love you guys. But, I’m not going into great detail about Ojukwu here. Just know I love him – his length, his short area quickness, his pedigree. I dove into Ojukwu’s film over on Stacking The Inbox, so please just go read that so I don’t have to write a thousand more words about why I like him. I would love nothing more than for this young buck to rise up and seize the opportunity at right tackle.
