Okay, Let’s Talk About Flying Cars

It finally looks like some sort of flying cars are in the works. The Jetsons would be so proud.

I can remember watching The Jetsons as a kid and thinking about how cool it would be to have an entire civilization miles up in the air. I always thought that by the time I grew up, that’s how the world would look. That’s because I was a child and had a stupid child brain. But, as it turns out, it might be by the time I hit middle age that we see at least flying cars. The whole civilization in the sky thing might have to wait, but I’m not going to be greedy. One thing at a time. Besides, if they can figure out this part, they’ll have plenty of free time to get the houses above the clouds built. And, hey – maybe by the time I’m 90, they’ll have figured out de-aging and I actually will live long enough to be in one of those big glass orb building floating perilously 50 miles in the air.

Anyway, what got me thinking about all of this today is this story I found on Space dot com. It’s reporting that there is a “NASA-proven propulsion system” that they’ve used to get a successful test (in a wind tunnel) on a flying car type of thing. This thing gets up to 160 MPH but produces less than 55 decibels of noise at 50 feet, which is roughly the equivalent of an electric toothbrush according to Google. So, folks – this sounds like the future to me. It is here and it is now. Think of all the things we could do in this thing in the roughly eight decades it would take our government to regulate it. No more sitting in traffic. No more running over pedestrians. You want to go somewhere? You just hop in your flying car and get to where you’re going as the crow flies. I would love that so much.

They say it’s not going to happen any time soon, but that sounds like something someone would say when they’re trying to set the bar low. Under-promise and over-deliver, y’know? I’m not falling for it! Since it’s been so long since The Jetsons graced our television screens, I say it could happen at any minute because they’ve had a really long time to work on it. That’s just my prediction, though. I don’t have any sources at NASA or wherever this wind tunnel was that they had a successful test in. That’s just me reading the tea leaves and being the empath that I am.
