Every year there is a short period of time that serves as the signal that autumn is about to arrive. In my circle, we refer to it as ‘Fake Fall’ and during this time there is that sweet crisp in the air that lets you know that something special is on its way. Once ‘Fake Fall’ dissipates, we are left with a week or two of summer before the world is taken over by Uggs, pumpkin spice everything and most importantly, Spooky Season.
In my reality, Spooky Season is a season all its own that lives inside of fall. While I cannot think of a single soul that does not love the fall, there are many who do not enjoy the time of all things scary and evil. There is so much to enjoy during this season within a season, including haunted hay rides and houses, bonfires, trick or treating, and scary amusement parks to name a few.
My favorite thing to do during Spooky Season is to turn all of the lights off and curl up on the couch and enjoy some blood curling horror movies. Once the popcorn is popped and the fall beer of choice has been opened, the hard part of deciding which scary movie to watch becomes as stressful to pick as it is watching Alice in the canoe at the end of Friday the 13th. We all know the movie isn’t going to end with you peacefully lounging in the lake, so move your ass before something happens!
With the world of streaming, you can spend hours looking for the right movie to start that if you’re not careful the 95 minute run time of the original Friday will have passed without you even noticing Kevin Bacon is dead. I have again derived a list for fans of foreign horror films for the duration of Spooky Season so they can start the movie while the popcorn is still hot and the beer is still cold.
The vast majority of the movies listed can be found on subscription based streaming services that you already are paying for or on some free to views such as Tubi and Pluto. The others can either still be viewed in a theater or at home through On Demand. The big winner this season is AMC+. The streaming service that serves as the home of The Walking Dead and its numerous spinoffs a staggering 13 selections.
If you are a big fan of foreign horror like myself I think you will find that this year’s list has a little for everyone. If you are a fan of French extremist or Asian supernatural or Mexican possession films, there is something here for you and if you are new to foreign horror films, then welcome to the club. Regardless of your fandom, I hope you enjoy these films and have an amazing Spooky Season.
