UTSA Undefeated Since Jeff Traylor Smashed His Finger in a Rat Trap

If you ask me, Jeff Traylor should smash his finger in a rat trap every week.

I meant to get around to this story last week, but never had the chance. Oh well – we’re here this week, and honestly it worked out better because the UTSA Roadrunners have a little streak going. Our dreams of a UTSA-Texas Fiesta Bowl may have been dashed when UTSA started 1-3, but they’ve quietly gone 4-0 in their last four games and they’re 4-0 in American play. They’re still in that race and very well could end up battling for the conference title come season’s end. I have no idea why head coach Jeff Traylor picked this spot to set out rat traps as a reminder to players to “not eat the cheese,” but I think he’s inadvertently got a little mojo going for the program. We didn’t know if this story was true. It was just a rumor before JJ Perez probed the coach about it last week, and thank goodness he did.

It would’ve killed a lesser man, but I’m okay” absolutely sent me. So, there you have it. Straight from the horse’s mouth, Traylor put rat traps out and it backfired on him because of one of his smartass seniors. I didn’t know coaches were still doing stuff like this in the year 2023, but here we are. This feels like something that would happen at high school, but listen – I’m not going to judge too hard. If anyone can appreciate a good metaphor, it’s me. I would be the coach putting chains in players lockers so they’d have to move them in order to get dressed. You know…emphasis on moving the chains and what have you. But, this was effective. Traylor’s finger is all beat to shit, but what happened? UTSA won 41-27 over East Carolina.

I’m not one for superstitions, but that qualifies as “results,” folks. If I’m Traylor, I think I’m smashing my finger in a rat trap every week until UTSA loses. Traylor smashing his finger in a rat trap has started a new undefeated streak for this program, and who knows? Maybe if they keep it up, they just might win the American.
