Tonight’s game between the Michigan Wolverines and the Washington Huskies for the National Championship of the College Football Playoff (I believe that’s the official title) is quite the interesting contest. There’s no shortage of storylines as we gear up for this game, but the headliner, at least in my opinion, is Jim Harbaugh. For one, the man was suspended for six games this season amid a sign-stealing scandal. Regardless of the severity of the incident, if you scroll Twitter on a random day, you’ll find a lot of folks have labeled him as a cheater. Is Harbaugh a villain outside of the friendly confines of Michigan? I don’t know. But, I feel like the Washington Huskies have the likability factor in this game because of that. For another, his status very much feels up in the air. If the Wolverines pull this off tonight, I’d say it’s a lock that he bolts for the NFL with his name being tied to openings in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Washington.

On the other side of this equation is Michael Penix Jr., a fantastic story involving a quarterback that made Indiana football relevant for several injury-ravaged seasons utilizing the modern advent of the transfer portal to get to a place where he could potentially win a National Championship and turn himself into a first round draft pick come spring. He’s throwing the ball to three wide receivers who will be playing in the NFL. He’s handing the ball off to a guy who will play in the NFL. And, he’s got NFL hosses up front blocking for him. The result has been an offense that, win it’s on, it is one of the most fun units to watch in the entire sport.

That also makes for an interesting ‘strength vs. strength’ matchup. If the Huskies can go out there and score on this Michigan defense, this game will come down to whether or not JJ McCarthy and company can go out there and match them blow for blow. The Huskies defense bowed up on a potent Texas passing game last week – can they repeat the effort? The line opened at Michigan -3.5 for this game, but has since been bet up to Michigan -5.5. Either smart money thinks Michigan is going to cruise in this one, or the sports books are about to make a ton of money when the Huskies pull this off. Regardless, people have written this Huskies team off several times before. We’ll see.

Nonetheless, as the internet’s official unofficial kings of the drinking game, you know we had to run it back for this one. I’m going to be cooking up some pizzas, some wings, and I have a bottle of gin on hand to celebrate the occasion from the comfort of my own home. So, don’t be stupid and drink and drive tonight. Enjoy this drinking game responsibly! LFG!

National Championship Drinking Game 2024

TAKE A DRINK IF/WHEN…

  • Anyone talks about how good the CFP semi-finals were.
  • the “NFL talent” on the field is discussed.
  • Someone mentions Jim Harbaugh‘s suspension on air.
  • There’s a shot of JJ McCarthy that shows his fboy haircut.
  • Someone calls Washington “the underdog.”
  • You hear the term “Heisman finalist.”
  • Anyone mentions Kalen DeBoer‘s age.
  • Michael Penix Jr. takes a deep shot (throws the ball 20+ yards).
  • Rome Odunze catches a pass of 10+ yards.
  • Roman Wilson catches a pass.
  • Dillon Johnson touches the ball.
  • Blake Corum amasses 10 yards – think fantasy football…one drink for every 10 yards of Blake Corum offense.
  • Donovan Edwards gets a carry.
  • Either kicker makes a field goal.
  • Either team registers a sack.

TAKE A SHOT IF/WHEN…

  • They actually hit the over (55.5).
  • Washington covers (+5.5).
  • There is a defensive or special teams touchdown. Yes, that means take a shot for each one scored.
  • Either quarterback – Penix or McCarthy – puts six total touchdowns on the board.
  • The game ends. That’s right, folks. It’s a bittersweet day. We won’t witness another college football game until late August/early September. No matter who your team is, who you were rooting for in this game, or what – raise a glass, make a toast to this wonderful sport we love, and drink to another fun season in the books.

As usual, stay safe and responsible out there. If you drink, don’t drive. Do the watermelon crawl.
