Poetry: The Peril of the Void

'The Peril of the Void,' a new poem by Stoney Keeley reflecting on the feeling of emptiness that comes with helplessly wanting more out of life.

What is there to write about when the poet feels nothing? Despondent. Hollow. Staring blankly deep into somewhere beyond our plane of existence.

It’s the feeling of the flight home from vacation when all vacation did was make you want to run further from your reality.

It’s a cloudy day when it just won’t rain. Nature can’t even give you the easy sound of the rain wrapping at your window. Just clouds.

It’s needing a change but not having the energy to force it. Maybe you just don’t care to force it.

It’s the agony of longing for something more without quite knowing what that something is.

It’s humming along on a train, yet you don’t know what the ultimate destination is. You’re just a passenger in your own body.

You feel the absence of that which gave you gumption, that which irradiated you and gave you your sense of purpose.

It leaves a barren hole that you yearn to fill but don’t know how to. What’s the point, anyway?

It’s what I don’t think we understand about our emotions – that feeling something can motivate us, for better or for worse.

But, feeling nothing keeps us stagnant, vacant, and inert. Therein lies the peril of the void.
