You guys know I am a massive fan of ingenuity. People just using the resources at their disposal to come up with some clever way to solve a problem. It’s a tale as old as time, and it’s one that never ceases to amaze me. Even when it doesn’t work, you can’t help but respect the hustle. That’s the case with our story here today in which a couple of people tried to tape some lottery tickets together and pass it off as a million dollar winner. Hey – gotta do what you gotta do in today’s America.
In Florida (of course), Kira Enders and Dakota Jones attempted cash in a fake winning lottery ticket. This wasn’t some poor forgery – that would have at least been a valiant criminal attempt. No, all they did was “crudely” tape two non-winning $50 tickets together to try to make it look like they won $1 million.
It may surprise some of you to read this, but both of these people ended up arrested. Color me shocked, I know. But, you’ve got to risk it to get the biscuit, and sometimes, you risk it and end up in jail. Those are just the rules. What would’ve happened if the lottery people didn’t catch this scam? What if the people at the store were like “oh shit – good for you” and gave them a million dollars! You never know if you don’t try…sometimes, you just have to be willing to go to jail if you try and it goes wrong.
It reminds me of a story I heard from a former boss of mine….I want to say it was a bit from Cheers, but I don’t remember the show. I just remember the moral of the story – there was a character that always asked for a million dollars, and his rationale was, “well what if someone says ‘okay’ and all I had to do was ask?” That’s the spirit these two entrepreneurs carried out their mission with. It just so happens the lottery folks didn’t buy the taped-together ticket. But…you just never know unless you try!
