A poem titled 'Entity' to get us into the Spooky Season vibes from Stoney Keeley.

I stepped through the doorway and took in the low murmur of a dinner party alive with conversation.

I was aware I was in a dream, but even if I wasn’t, the setting would’ve been a dead giveaway.
oil lamps and open flames lit the parlor
And a distinct 1920s vernacular hung in the air.

No one noticed me and I felt like I floated through the party out of sight.
A silent observer
Traveling back in time.

But the illusion was up in short order.
A head turned to face me
And I immediately felt unwanted.

Eyes black as coal peered into mine
And without a word, whatever was staring at me said “you’re not welcome here,” following that up with “you’re getting too close.”

We seemed to be the only two present aware this was a dream.
How unsettling.
Uninvited in my own head.
My dreams were no longer my own.

Whatever the entity was
It wasn’t like me.
Hostile and threatening,
I tried to jar myself awake.

I was eventually successful
But as I came to
I still felt I wasn’t alone.
And a terrifying thought burrowed its way into my brain.

Where do you go when your own dreams are no safe haven from the evils beyond the shroud?
