Do we even know if they’re going to give out the Heisman Trophy this year? I don’t – anyway, we’re going to keep on rolling with the Heisman Watch here on SoBros Network and pretend like everything is okay and we’re going to get a full, normal season of college football. Here’s the Heisman Watch intro:
The Heisman Trophy is one of the strangest awards in the sports world. There’s no objective way to win…by default, people vote on the award. So, for the most part, it’s all about perception. Numbers don’t seem to matter as much as winning and having those signature “Heisman” moments, but you have to have both to win it all. We’re talking about the big time players from the big time teams in the big time conferences.
Which is unfortunate, in my opinion. I’m a strong proponent of everyone at least getting a shot, but that’s just not the way the world works. So, with that in mind, I’m taking a look at who’s who in the 2020 Heisman race so far based on who fits the seemingly arbitrary criteria laid forth by the Heisman Trust. But, if you think I’m wrong to do so, feel free to hit up the comments.
2020 HEISMAN WATCH: WEEK 12
5. Ian Book, Notre Dame QB – Another big win for the Irish to get to 9-0 on the season. Book’s stat line might not be as gaudy as you’d expect from a Heisman candidate – 23/33 for 279 yards and a touchdown (48 rushing yards, too). But, it was the way Book used his mobility to extend drives that really proved huge for Notre Dame. They are clearly one of the best teams in the country.
4. Jaret Patterson, Buffalo RB – Listen, I don’t give a shit that it’s Buffalo – if your team hangs 70 on someone, and you go for 409 rushing yards and EIGHT touchdowns, you’re going to get a spot on the Heisman Watch. That is just absurd. FOUR HUNDRED NINE YARDS – IN A SINGLE GAME! EIGHT TOUCHDOWNS! This is ridiculous.
3. Trevor Lawrence, Clemson QB – Trevor Lawrence came back and said, “bitch y’all best not forget me” on Saturday. Just when it looked like he was being surpassed in the Heisman race, he reminded us that it ain’t quite over yet. In dominating Pitt, Lawrence went 26/37 for a whopping 403 yards and two touchdowns.
2. DeVonta Smith, Alabama WR – Listen, I love Mac Jones as much as the next guy, but I maintain that Smith is actually Bama’s most deserving Heisman candidate on the season. He routinely effects games in ways you don’t see too often – he’s a weapon, and a threat to take it to the house every time he touches the ball. He proved that again on Saturday, hauling in seven catches for 171 yards and two more receiving touchdowns.
1. Mac Jones, Alabama QB – Jones had another huge game as the Tide blew out rival Auburn in an Iron Bowl that was never really that close. He finished 18/26 for 302 yards and five touchdowns on the day. Dude is in firm control of that vaunted Alabama offense, but he had some really nice touch passes and accurate throws on Saturday that should fend off the “yEaH bUt LoOk At AlL tHe WeApOnS oN tHaT tIdE oFfEnSe” crowd for another week.
