The 2018 ‘SoBro of the Year’ Watch List

Every year, this ragtag bunch of sports/entertainment/humor writers bands together and nominates individuals and/or entities from all walks of life who best resemble the values of this website: hard work, good work, being cool as shit, doing something cool as shit, and a whole bunch of other neat things that I’m literally making up as I’m typing this. Anyway, it’s the ‘SoBro of the Year’ Award.

What does ‘SoBro of the Year’ really mean, though? It basically just means you are the favorite person of this website, as voted on by all of its staff members and readers. It means you’ve had a killer year’s worth of work, have given back to the community, or just overall been someone that the type of person who reads SoBros Network would gravitate towards.

The Tom Arnold ‘SoBro of the Year’ Trophy is clearly an honor comparable to winning an Emmy. Just ask 2017 winner, Paul Heggen:

Well, the important stuff is unpacked.

We’re starting to wind down for the year, and set goals for 2018. So, with that sentiment in mind, let’s take a look at some of the names we’ve already been kicking around to nominate for the 2018 award.

Sports

We’re in Nashville, so I don’t think it’s unreasonable to find P.K. Subban, perhaps Nashville’s most charismatic and lovable athlete, back in the fold again in 2018…especially if the Preds go on another run at the Stanley Cup. Taylor Lewan is another dude who just seems to click with our demographic. I don’t anticipate he’ll be going away any time soon. Of course, we’re not going to give up on Dennis Kelly yet either. As long as people keep reading this article, he’s going to be in the ‘SoBro of the Year’ discussion.

Outside of the Nashville market, Marty Smith and Mike Leach have both been in the discussion. Leach is probably the single greatest treasure in college football, and Smith seems like a real guy’s guy. The disadvantage that these two guys have is that the folks outside of Nashville who were nominated didn’t typically fare too well in 2017.

In the pro wrestling world, Braun Strowman and the ‘King of New Nashville’ Rusev, are the frontrunners from the WWE. But, the WWE stars didn’t make it too far in 2017 voting, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t get someone in hunt at all.

On the independent scene, you have to figure Curt Stallion is going to be in the mix again. The guy finished third in 2017 voting, and I don’t anticipate he’ll start sucking at wrestling in 2018. Big things are happening for The Carnies right now, and I expect their names will be popping up all over the internet next year. But, in my opinion, the real dark horse in this discussion is Gunner Miller, a guy our SoBros crew saw for the first time at the 2017 Scenic City Invitational, and were all genuinely impressed with. Cadbury and I also caught him later in the Fall at Southern Underground Pro and wrestle the match of the night against Kevin Lee Davidson.

I should also mention that we’ll be sponsoring the Making Towns Classic here in Nashville next May. We’ve started prepping for the tourney, and Delilah Doom and Jordynne Grace, the tournament’s first two announced participants, have quickly become fan favorites of this bunch. I could definitely see either woman in the field, especially if they win the whole damn thing.

Entertainment

This is hilarious….the only two names from the entertainment world we’ve been able to come up with are Todd Chrisley and Josh Brolin. Chrisley because, fuck it. Why not? Brolin because he’s a bad ass and looks poised for a stellar 2018.

Nashville

There’s a whole host of Nashville broadcasters and media members whose names we’ve tossed around, but chief among them has to be Neil Orne. Orne was named champion of the fake Anchorman-style street fight among Nashville’s news stations. But, we’ve also shown some love for Big Joe Dubin, Chris Miller, Melanie Layden, and Paige Hill. Also, need to shout out Josh Breslow, who has really been on his shit lately, tweeting stories left and right. Holding down Saturday mornings.

Finally, if Brent Remadna would just eat that fucking fruit cake, he would be a sho0-in for this award.

With the groundswell of support he had as the 2017 runner-up, we have to give The Ultimate Predator another shot at the gold. I’ve long been a fan of J.R. Lind‘s writing and tweeting, and the man is a content machine, so there’s no reason to think he’ll slow down in 2018. Plus, there might not be a more universally loved Twitter account in Nashville than his.

Last but certainly not least, I’ll be keeping my eyes…ears rather…on the Squared Circle Radio crew (Brandon Haghany, Jason Martin, and David Reed). They’ve long since been Nashville’s voice on the WWE, and have put in the work to warrant such recognition.

If we missed someone, be sure to let us know in the comments or on our socials. Can’t believe 2018 is already nearly here.
