Doug Pederson called one of the greatest games I’ve ever seen in Super Bowl LII. Plain and simple, the guy couldn’t go wrong. The Philadelphia Eagles beat the mighty New England Patriots 41-33 in large part because of the game plan and Pederson’s knack for calling plays on offense. I mean, hell – the stones on this guy, calling a trick play pass to the quarterback at 4th & goal, and scoring on it!
From the top down, the Eagles played a perfect game, and now they’re champions for it. But, Peter King straight up asked him, in a much more refined manner, “where’d you get the stones?” Pederson’s response was excellent.

The Patriots are flying home losers today despite putting up a Super Bowl-record 613 yards and despite Tom Brady playing one of the games of his life. They are flying home losers because a head coach who was a backup NFL quarterback (Pederson) and an offensive coordinator who was a backup NFL quarterback (Reich) and a quarterback who was a backup NFL quarterback (Foles) beat Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. They knew the only chance to beat the Patriots was to call a top-secret play when it wouldn’t have mattered if the Patriots had 15 players on defense.
Inside the Eagles’ locker room, I got Pederson alone and asked where this football ethos came from.
“Playing quarterback, watching a lot of teams, a lot of football,” he said. “You learn if you play passive, if you play conservative, if you call plays conservatively, you are going to be 8-8, 9-7 every year. Every year. Frank and I just having that collaborative spirit to talk about things and talk with our quarterbacks and just come up with ways of keeping this game fresh and fun and exciting for our players. And that’s really where it all stems from.”
Is the man wrong? Obviously, he’s the one holding the Lombardi Trophy, so I’d say not.
But, my goodness. Mike Mularkey and Terry Robiskie probably kickin’ back somewhere, enjoying a couple of brewskis. Then, BOOM – absolutely murdered by Pederson. Doug Marrone and the Jacksonville Jaguars? SNIPED. The Buffalo Bills? R.I.P.
It’s good for Jeff Fisher that his level of conservative was more 7-9 than 9-7. He made it out of this alive. Everybody else? Gettin’ pooped on.
Y’all can call all that conservative predictable bullshit, but it isn’t going to win you games. Having a whale of a hog, beautiful silver hair, and rolling the dice when the deck is stacked against you.
Pederson has taught us that THAT is what’s going to get your team to the next level.
