This Tom Brady-Michael Jordan Debate Is Stupid

Yeah – I realize I’m about a month late getting to this debate, but here I am, folks. Take it or leave it. Your boy’s had an incredibly busy month. And, really – this is an opinion I just couldn’t let go. I hate the current ‘hot take’ culture in American sports talk today. It’s not about genuine conversation and genuine connection with people anymore. It seems to be about who can have the whackiest, zaniest hot takes and bring in the most clicks or listens.

I get that, in a way, that’s kind of what we do here, just by offering our perspective on things. And, that’s sort of the nature of sports talk – we need stuff to talk about so you end up debating crazy things sometimes. But, one thing you can always count on from us, is getting the real SoBros opinions. We aren’t going to dish hot takes…unless of course we’re dishing hot takes sarcastically.

Anyway, leading up to Super Bowl LII, and even after it, the talking heads started talking about who was the greatest sports superstar in America’s history: Tom Brady or Michael Jordan?

That’s fine, I guess. People tuned in. A lot of folks had pretty strong opinions about it. Personally, I think you could talk about Brady taking a dump and it would draw fiery conversation because he’s such a polarizing guy. The only time I’ve seen the totality of sports fandom in this country united in support of Brady was when that wild Boston radio personality called his kid a piss ant.

But, comparing two guys from different generations in completely different sports is ludicrous. How do you measure six NBA titles in the 90s to five Super Bowl titles in the 2000s? Winning a basketball game is completely different from winning a football game. In every way.

And, I hope you guys aren’t talking about marketability, because that’s no debate. Jordan has the most iconic shoe line and overall sports brand of all time.

Also, why are we just assuming this is a debate between Brady and Jordan? Where’s Muhammad Ali? Tiger Woods? There’s a ton of guys who could lay claim to the greatest athlete in American sports history.

Sure, they’re both cold-blooded assassins on the field/court. But, this isn’t a debate to be had. Keep comparing Brady to Joe Montana and Jordan to LeBron James. That works. But, then – I guess you don’t have people talking about you, and you damn sure don’t have any bloggers baited into writing an entire post about how stupid this topic is….
