Major Applewhite Is the Latest Ex-head Coach to Join the Alabama Staff As an Analyst

It certainly appears as though Nick Saban’s land of the misfit coaches is making another acquisition. Former Houston Cougars head coach Major Applewhite will join the Alabama Crimson Tide as an “analyst.”

There it is – that handy “A” word that’s been thrown around in Tuscaloosa for several years now.

Former Houston football coach Major Applewhite will join Alabama‘s program as an analyst this season, a source confirmed to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg.

AL.com reported first reported the move on Tuesday.

It will be Applewhite’s second stint with the Crimson Tide; he spent one season as the school’s offensive coordinator in 2007 before joining Texas. He is the latest former FBS coach to become an analyst at Alabama, following Steve Sarkisian and Butch Jones.

Applewhite was fired by Houston in December after going 15-11 in two-plus seasons leading the program. He was owed a $1.95 million buyout by the Cougars.

Man, wasn’t Applewhite supposed to be among the class of next offensive hot shots? 15-11 and a bunch of bowl losses just doesn’t cut it at Houston, apparently.

Usually, you come to Alabama after you’re caught showing up to practice drunk….or after a good five or so years of mediocrity. Applewhite just decided to forego all of that. Maybe it’s a genius move? He could’ve seen the writing on the wall and thought, “nope – I better go ahead and become an analyst for Alabama while I can.”

He’s trying the old Kliff Kingsbury route of failing upward. Read the tea leaves, folks. Mediocre at Houston > analyst at Alabama > head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Book it.
