The 2019 NFL Draft takes place April 25-27 this year, emanating LIVE from right here in Nashville, Tennessee. As it stands, the Tennessee Titans have one first round draft pick. General manager Jon Robinson and head coach Mike Vrabel currently hold the 25th overall selection. Over the next few weeks, your boy “Big Natural” Stoney Keeley will be taking a look at some of the prospects who are either rumored to be tied to or who make sense for the Titans.
Ah, yes – draft season, folks. We’re here. It’s time. Going to dust off the old notebook and get to work. As it stands, JRob has successfully murdered free agency. The Titans could go a number of ways with the #19 pick. Thanks to his key free agent additions, I don’t see the Titans being married to any certain position – they could use more interior offensive line help, another wide receiver, defensive line depth, but most importantly, MORE PASS RUSH.
That’s why I’m starting with former Missisippi State EDGE Montez Sweat. From the first draft guide I read, Sweat was a guy that looked like a possibility. I’ve seen a lot of #TitansGuys lusting for his abilities. And, rightfully so – this kid is a hoss. He’s 6’6″ and 260 pounds, long and athletic, baby. He also ran a damn freakish 4.41 40.
And, when you start watching Sweat’s highlights, it’s that acceleration that jumps off the screen first. This guy has a high motor, and is so fast and powerful that he beats his blockers and gets to the quarterback before they know what hit ’em. His physicality could help the Titans in run support, too – boosting them back to being one of the best units in the league again.
In 2018, Sweat accumulated 53 tackles (14 of those for a loss) and 11.5 sacks. He was voted first team All-SEC in both 2017 and 2018. The AP gave him a second-team All-American nod in 2018. Sweat stood out at the Senior Bowl this year, too. He’s already an accomplished guy.
What I like most about a potential Sweat-Titans union is that as a Bulldog, he played in both a 4-3 and 3-4 defense. Not only is he fast, but he’s MULTIPLE.
Now, he’s not going to drop into coverage or anything, not that you’d really draft him to do that. Nor is he always a reliable tackler in open space. But, as a pure, traditional pass rusher, Sweat figures to excel right away. It’s worth noting that he was diagnosed with an undisclosed heart condition, though it’s since been reported that it’s not that serious.
Sadly, I don’t think any of us should get our hopes up. Sweat seems to have climbed up into top 10 consideration, so he may be out of reach for the Titans. This is a kid who should be a week one starter.
