Who Should Be the Top Overall Pick in This Year’s NFL Draft?

We’re about a month away from NFL Draft going down in Nashville, Tennessee. It’s one of the most exciting periods on the football calendar, and really, it’s our last gasp of legit football talk before training camp starts in July. Enjoy while it lasts, y’all. Nonetheless, the Arizona Cardinals are on the clock with the top overall pick in their possession. Realistically, I think there are three players who could potentially end up being said pick.

Nick Bosa

For what feels like a year, Nick Bosa has been ‘the lock’ to go first overall. And, for good reason – Bosa appears poised to be a dominant force on the edge for the next decade. The former Ohio State Buckeye tallied 17.5 sacks in 29 college games, and has drawn comparisons to his brother Joey, who is already a stud defensive end for the Los Angeles Chargers.

Kyler Murray

If you would’ve told me Kyler Murray was in the running for the top overall pick during the 2018 season, I would’ve laughed in your face. Namely, because no one thought there was a chance the former Sooner quarterback would even declare for the NFL Draft (what, with the whole baseball thing and all).

Yet, here we are, at the end of March, and more and more rumblings are starting to come out that the Cardinals are interested in Murray. At the risk of being labeled a hater, I don’t know that Murray is even the best quarterback in this class (I’m a big Dwayne Haskins guy, and still believe there’s a chance Drew Lock ends up better than both of ’em).

But, there’s no denying that he’s an electric play-maker, not unlike the guy who went at #1 overall last year, Baker Mayfield. I get the vision – I just don’t trust the execution. Can Murray excel in the NFL the same way he did at Oklahoma? That’s the multi-million dollar question. The desperation of NFL teams to find that quarterback could ultimately lead to Murray going first overall, whether it’s to the Cardinals or to another suitor who trades up to get him.

Quinnen Williams

I think there’s a strong chance that the former Alabama Crimson Tide standout defensive lineman ends up being the best player to come out of this draft. His stats aren’t eye-popping, but Quinnen Williams is a force to be reckoned with – few players effect the game the way Williams did at Alabama. I’ve read some analysts give him an Aaron Donald ceiling. If that’s the case, then holy shit – why wouldn’t you make this guy the first pick???

Conclusion

I questioned the idea that the Cardinals would take Murray (read below). But, there’s an awful lot of credible sources out there reporting a serious interest in the quarterback. Whether that’s a smokescreen or not remains to be seen. I just can’t fathom the idea that you’d trade up to grab a quarterback at #10 overall and then take another quarterback in the first round a year later. I get there’s a change in regime, and they may want their guy, but what can you really get for Josh Rosen at this point? Is Murray really “the guy?” And, do you strip things down and rebuild for him?

I don’t know – given how good Bosa is and how his presence fills a huge need on that defense, I still say he’s the pick. Again, I still think there’s a chance Williams ends up better than both of ’em, but I think Bosa is the sexier and safer pick. One way or another, it sure seems like we’re going to be in for a hell of a ride in April.

Just a gentle reminder to always look for the blue checkmark before reporting things during draft season.
