Joe Burrow: Heisman Candidate (Week 2 Heisman Watch)

The 2019 Heisman Watch is underway. The Heisman Trophy is one of the strangest awards in the sports world. There’s no objective way to win…by default, people vote on the award. So, for the most part, it’s all about perception. Numbers don’t seem to matter as much as winning and having those signature “Heisman” moments, but you have to have both to win it all. We’re talking about the big time players from the big time teams in the big time conferences.

Which is unfortunate, in my opinion. I’m a strong proponent of everyone at least getting a shot, but that’s just not the way the world works. So, with that in mind, I’m taking a look at who’s who in the 2019 Heisman race so far based on who fits the seemingly arbitrary criteria laid forth by the Heisman Trust. But, if you think I’m wrong to do so, feel free to hit up the comments.

2019 HEISMAN WATCH: WEEK 2

5. Justin Jefferson, LSU WR – What has happened to the SEC? Two weeks in a row and we’ve got an SEC receiver in the Heisman Watch? Jefferson finished the Texas game with 9 receptions for 163 yards and three touchdowns. He looks like the best of a promising receiving corps and has quietly crept up to 9th in receiving yards in all of the FBS.

4. Jalen Hurts, Oklahoma QB – After destroying Houston in Week 1, Hurts played in limited action against South Dakota. Still, he went 14/18 for 259 and three touchdowns through the air. Gun to my head, I still say the Heisman is his to lose through two weeks.

3. Tua Tagovailoa, Alabama QB – Another quarterback posting some solid stats in a limited role. Tagovailoa’s rushing touchdown breaks the tie with Hurts. He went 16/24 for 227 yards, three touchdowns, and added 33 yards rushing and a TD on the ground. He’s one of the Heisman favorites for good reason, folks.

2. Justin Herbert, Oregon QB – The Oregon quarterback went 19/26 for 310 yards and five touchdowns against Nevada. That’s a #nice stat line, but for me, I loved seeing Herbert really put the Ducks on his back and wake ’em up when they were sleepwalking against Nevada. Those were some quality NFL throws – no doubt that stuff like that is what has him being rated as one of the top quarterback prospects in a loaded 2020 NFL Draft class.

1. Joe Burrow, LSU QB – Two weeks in, and I’m saying it. Joe Burrow is a bona fide Heisman candidate. LFG. Joe Brady has that Tigers offense firing on all cylinders. Burrow went 31/39 for 471 yards, four touchdowns, and an interception against the Texas Longhorns. It was a top-10 match-up that turned into a shootout. Burrow deserves the nod this week for slinging the ball around like a pro and getting that ‘Heisman moment’ type of win.
