Review: J & G Pizza and Steak House (Manchester)

So, a little over a week ago, I found myself captaining a car load of people heading down to Tullahoma, Tennessee for GCW’s WOMBAT show at the Gypsy Joe Arena. I’ve made a few trips down to Tullahoma this year. Every time I get off I-40 at Manchester, I drive past this J & G Pizza and Steak House.

For whatever reason, be it the old-fashioned neon sign out front or the idea of a pizza and steak house out in the country, I’ve been fascinated with it. That’s why I was relieved to hear that other people had an equal fascination with this place. Long time friend of the brand, Lane, suggested that we should try it out on that trip down to WOMBAT. So, we did.

And, boy – do I not regret it at all whatsoever. They have a renowned salad bar, fried everything, and offer up spaghetti as a side dish (which I had previously not heard of). I got a chicken pesto pita, an order of onion rings, and some fried mushrooms to start with, while Lane ordered steak and sketti.

It felt like we had stumbled upon some old tavern in the woods somewhere and honestly, I’m here for every minute of it. This place is a gem.

Ratings

Food: 3.5/10. If you get anything fried, you’re in good shape. Lane veered off of that path and ended up worse for it. The onion rings were excellent. I had never heard of anyone combining pesto and a pita, so as soon as I saw that, I had to try it. It tasted alright, but I didn’t make it through the whole thing before feeling a little queasy. It didn’t help when I looked at my plate and saw a pistachio-colored liquid pooling up in it. But, did that stop me from finishing my pita? Hell no. I ate every bit of it, thought it was actually pretty interesting, and dealt with the intestinal cramps later.

Value: 5/10. You simply will not find anywhere in Nashville that is willing to give you that much food for that little of a price. I mean, can that be said about a lot of places out in the country? Sure. But, I did think it was a little more expensive than most places out in the country.

Atmosphere: 7/10. Great service. Nice warmth. I loved the viking/pirate ship/Christmas decor. Just an all around interesting establishment.

Overall: 5.17/10. We had a lot of fun, and I ate some really good onion rings. As far as out-there country restaurants go, I thought this was just slightly above average, even if everyone in the car was afraid they were going to shit themselves.
