On Sunday, the legend of Patrick Mahomes grew by a mile. With a little over seven minutes to go in the 4th quarter, the Kansas City Chiefs were down 20-10 to the San Francisco 49ers. But, as the Chiefs offense has proven throughout the entire playoff run, they had ’em right where they wanted ’em. Mahomes and company proceeded to rattle off 21 unanswered points. Tyreek Hill took advantage of blown coverage. Sammy Watkins outran Richard Sherman. And, Mahomes made every throw in the book.
The Chiefs would win the Super Bowl, 31-20. It was a classic comeback and Mahomes was named Super Bowl MVP for his efforts. He’s now the youngest starting quarterback in NFL history to be named league MVP (in 2018), win the Super Bowl, and earn Super Bowl MVP honors. The things this guy can do are truly amazing.
People are calling him the next Tom Brady, and while I would encourage folks to pump brakes on anointing him the G.O.A.T. just yet, I can see the comparison based on the simple “greatness” factor.
This guy was named NFL MVP in 2018 during his first full year as the starter. The Chiefs made it to the AFC Championship a season ago, where they lost to the eventual Super Bowl champion New England Patriots. He followed that up with this Super Bowl run in 2019. I mean, which quarterback in NFL history has had a better first two seasons? I would say it’s unprecedented, and it’s an indicator of the standard for Mahomes.
What about this Chiefs regime should make us think things are going to change? I know we always overreact to a Super Bowl winner and say they’re going to be good for a long time and all that, but this game didn’t feel like talent coming together at the right time to make a run. This game felt like a systematic approach to championship football was installed. The Chiefs are now off to the races in a run that could yield multiple Super Bowl championships.
Why? Mahomes, most certainly. But, look at the talent around him – the way the Chiefs have drafted and signed wide receiver and tight end talent. Look at the way they draft/sign and use their running backs…the way they’ve built that offensive line. Look at the offensive prowess the coaching staff has, and the improvement that Steve Spagnuolo brought to the defense. These are massive building blocks that, if you get right, install a leadership and culture that wins titles. The Chiefs have built that foundation, and now they’re just going to stockpile talent around Mahomes. That’s the model.
Of course, nothing’s a certainty in the NFL. Hopefully, Mahomes will have a lengthy healthy career, but obviously, an injury would completely derail the Chiefs. Maybe Andy Reid retires, but if he sticks around, you’d have to think that spot would be there for Eric Bieniemy to take. But, if all goes according to plan, we could be seeing the start of something special.
Patrick Mahomes is the future.
