The Tennessee Titans are in a pretty good spot heading into the 2020 NFL Draft in Nashville. That’s usually the case when you’re drafting among the last four spots in the first round. After a season that saw the Titans run all the way to the AFC Championship, you won’t find many glaring holes on this roster. I’ve seen what feels like a million mock drafts so far, and the authors all seem to be thinking edge rusher, defensive line, offensive line, wide receiver, or cornerback.
That said, you never know what’s going to happen in the NFL Draft. The dominoes could fall in any number of ways and put the Titans in an interesting position. Or, maybe that wheelin’ dealin’ sonofagun Jon Robinson has a trick up his sleeve and hasn’t shown his hand. I’ve put together a list of a few outside-the-box options for the Titans at #29 should things either not go their way, or should the team be thinking differently than we are.
Quarterback
The quarterback position is one the Titans are going to have to address at some point…unless they really are giving Logan Woodside his time to shine. I mean, they keep that guy on or around the main roster at all times, though he’s yet to get a real crack at valuable playing time.
They’ve locked down Ryan Tannehill, but there’s still the major question of whether or not he can sustain the success he had in 2019. Plus, they’ll still need to address depth behind him.
So, what if….knowing they’re pretty well stocked at most other positions…the Titans elect to spend a first round pick on a talented quarterback they can develop over time behind Tannehill?
Jordan Love immediately comes to mind as a guy who could be available at #29 and has all of the explosive and dynamic athletic qualities to become a big time play-maker in the NFL. I don’t think going quarterback in the first round would be a very popular pick, but it’s one that could fortify the most important position on the field.
Trade up
Edge rusher is one of the primary needs for the Titans heading into the draft. But, it’s not a particularly good edge rusher draft stocked with Week 1 talent. There are only a handful of guys with first round grades – what if it’s starting to look like all of those guys are going to be gone by say #24? The Titans might consider moving up to get their guy.
Similarly, what if there’s a run on defensive linemen in the early to mid-first round? Only being a few pieces away from legit Super Bowl contender-ship would afford the Titans the luxury of being able to burn a middle or late round pick or two to get that one game-wrecker.
Trade down
Or, hell – what if there’s no one that immediately fills a need there at #29? The Titans could reasonably trade down to acquire extra picks and continue to stockpile depth.
Whew – shorter column than usual this year. There really aren’t a whole lot of ways the Titans could go that would surprise me this year. But, the reality is that the Titans have a good roster. That allows them to focus on building quality depth and stockpiling talent regardless of position. The true ‘best player available’ strategy.
