Today's playlist highlights some of the great alternative music of the '90s.

As a teen boy at the start of the 1990s, I was a huge fan of hair metal. In 1991, a music video hit the MTV airwaves and destroyed the pure, pure world I lived in.

Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” turned the whole music world upside down, much like rap did in the 1980s. Nearly 30 years later, and I still don’t understand the appeal of the band.

It took some time, but I eventually came to love alternative music, especially bands like Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, and Sonic Youth. Today’s playlist honors some of the great songs that came from the era of flannel shirts.

Sit back and reminisce to a time when a 120 Minutes ruled on MTV and enjoy this playlist.
