Around ten years ago, a new style of country music hit the airwaves and sent shock waves through out the landscape. Bro-country was met with equal amounts of cheers and jeers when it first surfaced in the late 2000s.
What exactly makes a song a part of Bro-country? The song’s theme plays a huge part in its labeling. Is the song about parties? Girls? Small towns? Beer or Liquor? Hard Work? If it features any of these topics then there’s a good chance it belongs in the category.
Bro-country is heavily influenced by hip-hop, electronica and hard rock. The “kings” of the sub-genre Florida Georgia Line are the ones responsible for the name as they were the subject of a New York magazine article in 2013. The band was gifted the name when the writer was trying to describe their music.
Today’s playlist pays tribute to the short lived style of country music. Put on your $500 jeans, your $100 vintage concert t-shirt and grab an IPA and push play on some ‘bro’ tunes.
