This year, the Atlanta Film Festival took place virtually from 9/17-9/27. We’ll be providing our coverage of the event over the course of the next week, but you can definitely check out all of the highlights on the Atlanta Film Festival’s site here.
No doubt about it – I’ll have no trouble hitting my word count goal with the title of this one literally being 15 Things You Didn’t Know About Bigfoot: Number 1 Will Blow Your Mind. It’s a title that is just as outrageous as the sense of humor that shines through this mockumentary about Brian, a burnt out clickbait reporter taking another shit story and heading down to Georgia to cover a giant Bigfoot festival.
Brian and his producer Zach end up deep in the shit, in the company of ‘The Cryptid Commander’ Jeff, when they unravel the truth about what’s going on in those Georgia woods. That’s where we get our big story, and where the tale really takes off.
There’s no doubt that this is a SoBros Network kinda movie – if you’re familiar with our brand, this one’s right up your alley. But for all of the goofy humor, sarcasm, and excellent use of facial expressions and comedic timing, there are some real world messages strewn about this film that give it a real sense of heart.
Namely, it’s a resonating critique of the modern era of clickbait and #content. Agencies these days seem to value making something cool and shareable more than they do telling actual stories. You can’t watch this movie without thinking about how you consume your social media.
I thought it also created a great sense of adventure, with Brian finally accepting the terms of the itinerary and sticking with the assignment, getting out in the woods, and stumbling upon some real wild shit. Isn’t that what we all hope for when we go wandering around in the woods?
15 Things You Didn’t Know About Bigfoot: Number 1 Will Blow Your Mind manages to play off of the fun of conspiracy theories and even works some relatable themes like frustration with your job and learning to grow and self-reflect in as well. I’ll give ’em credit – this film is a lot more layered than I thought it would be. Props to the team for that.
All in all, it was an enjoyable film that surprised me. The story itself wasn’t very deep, but it did provoke some honest and valid criticisms of the era we live in. However, there were a few instances when the story got a little too out of hand. A few moments really took me out of the moment, and I have to admit, I did roll my eyes near the end. There were also a couple of plot points that could’ve been explored a little more that might’ve added a little more depth to a character or two (hit me up in the DMs if you’ve seen it and want to chat, but I ain’t spoilin’ SHIT here, guys).
If you’re asking me for the patented #VicksFlicks star rating, I’m giving it a solid and respectable 3/5.
