As an only child, your parents’ undivided attention is something you don’t ask for, you command it. Being spoiled is the result of that, and our boy Tim (Miles Christopher Bakshi) is a prime example. His mom (Lisa Kudrow) and dad (Jimmy Kimmel) provide and provide, filling his childhood with wonderful adventures, hugs, and goodnight songs. Tim is living the good life, until suddenly, a sharp-dressed man in a baby’s body comes strutting in to ruin his family fun. The Boss Baby, Dreamworks newest animation, has chunks of wit and cutesy, while still crying for a sippy cup of inventiveness.
Forget how babies are born, director Tom McGrath (Madagascar, Megamind) cares about putting them to work. A corporate cycle decides their fate with a feather to the foot, you’re either in a family or in management. Guess which one Boss Baby (Alec Baldwin) falls in to?
He’s all business as he is sent to Tim’s family to achieve one thing: to demolish the love for puppies. Tim’s parents are employed by PuppyCo, and their boss, Francis Francis (Steve Buscemi), is about to unveil a pup that’ll be a game-changer for those infant brats. In order for Tim and Boss to get rid of each other, they must unite to take down man’s best friend. We can only have one ultimate adorable species in the world of The Boss Baby!
Baldwin gives Boss Baby the right amount of sass and business savvy, cut-throat attitude. This little stinker’s soft spot for becoming a part of a real family feeds this featherminded kiddie flick the only genuine piece of emotion. As much as Boss may try to deny it, a huge promotion to the big corner office may not make him a happy baby.
I wish The Boss Baby‘s imagination was as big as Tim’s. Truly, the best scenes are when Tim goes on his own lively escapades in his mind. His dreams burst just like my hope for something halfway comparable to last March’s excellent Zootopia. Silly me.
The Boss Baby is no dirty diaper, but there ain’t nothing fresh in there either.
