After a tumultuous election night that has still yet to end, it was nice to take a break from the madness and enjoy an hour of what is the madness of The Masked Singer. This week, Group C returned for its playoff round. Last week, Group C made its debut and Lips was unmasked to be talk show host Wendy Williams.
The show kicks off with a surprise performance by Mr. TV, who was unmasked to be Season 2 winner Wayne Brady aka The Fox. Brady stuck around to be the guest judge for the week. The Mushroom is the first singer set to perform.
The clue package for Mushroom was loaded with Mean Girls references and hints of being an outcast. The performer gave another powerful performance with his rendition of Cher’s “If I Could Turn Back Time” and proved again that he is the most powerful singer in Group C. Guest judge Wayne Brady believes it is Jaden Smith behind the mask and that might be the best guess to date. I personally am torn between Jaden or Hamilton alum Anthony Ramos as the voice behind the Mushroom. The celebrity panel believes it could also be Donald Glover or Adam Lambert.
Next to take the stage is Broccoli. We see Foodfellas come across the screen during the clue package clearly in reference to Goodfellas plus Broccoli declares loving to rock the costume and always wanting to enrich lives like the super food does. He claims to have had dinner with the “Big Cheese” and a pizza with ham and pineapple is seen as well. Broccoli delivered a dramatic performance of Lionel Ritchie’s “Hello” and proves he is an older gentleman through his voice. The panel had some very good guesses with Wayne Brady, Martin Short, and Jason Alexander. I am not feeling too confident on my initial guess of Kevin Smith and am beginning to lean towards Joe Pesci and Kevin Pollack.
Squiggly Monster is set to perform next and his clue package has him behind the desk in the Oval Office. A reference to An Inconvenient Truth is giving and Monster tells us he went through a lot of trauma as a kid and realized through it that laughter is the best medicine. A number of falls and mishaps are shown leading to the character eating a bunch of burritos. Squiggly Monster performs “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” by the Rolling Stones and though he doesn’t have the strongest voice, he always appears to be having a blast on stage. Ted Danson, David Hasselfhoff, and Al Gore are the guesses given by the panel.
Last to perform in the playoff round is Jellyfish and it appears she has gotten over her nerves from last week. Jellyfish is used to being the best at what she does and that being on the show has her missing the ones that pick her up when she’s down, her family. She calls out her biggest supporter “Papa Joey” as he would always take her to gigs when she was younger. She shakes off the nerves and delivers a powerful performance of the country music classic “Crazy.” Sophia Richie, Lana Condor, Jamie Lynn Spears and Halle Bailey were guesses by the judges, but I’m going out on a limb that it’s Jessica Simpson simply on the fact that her father’s name is Joe.
After the final commercial break, the show returns with the unmasking of Squiggly Monster. The judge’s first impression guesses include Jenny McCarthy and Robin Thicke’s guess of Bob Saget, Ken Jeong’s Fabio, and Nicole Scherzinger’s “one of the Ying Yang Twins.” I think Nicole was smoking whatever Ken is usually smoking. Turns out, Jenny and Robin were right from the jump as it is Danny Tanner from Full House inside the Squiggly Monster costume. Bob Saget joins Wendy Williams, Busta Rhymes, Mark Sanchez, Mickey Rourke, and Brian Austin Green as the unmasked performers this season.
