For millions of Americans, this is the happiest and saddest weekend of the year. Sunday brings us the Super Bowl, which makes all of us happy even if your favorite team is not playing in the big game. From all the food to the now mainly-legal gambling to the commercials to the halftime show, everyone can find something they like about the Super Bowl. Once the Lombardi Trophy is hoisted as the confetti falls, we are quickly reminded of how there is no football for over six months. This alone is why so many call out of work the Monday after.

If you are one of the fortunate ones to call out of work on Super Bowl Sadness Monday, then check out some of the new music out this week to help mend your loss.

Foo Fighters Medicine at Midnight

Remember 2019 when we were all moving around the world without much of a care in our head? Man, I miss those days. Well, it is now 2021 and we are all still stuck in a pandemic frantically looking for a glimmer of hope to our lives returning to some sort of normalcy. That glimmer arrived this week in the form of the Foo Fighters 10th studio album.

Medicine at Midnight is very much a party record by the band’s standards that is sometimes Bowie and Jack White all at the same time. It could easily be the soundtrack we have all been desperately wanting to pick us up from our pandemic depression. Midnight stands as the band’s most pop record to date and it is a very promising look into what Foo Fighters future will sound like. After 20 plus years as one of the hardest-working rock bands you would assume they would be perfectly content rinsing and repeating the same type of album that their loyal fan base would happily consume but not Dave and the boys.

Lead single “Shame Shame” just screams White Stripes and is one of those songs that just slimes its way into your ear and before you know it you’ve been singing it for twenty minutes. The album’s title track is an obvious nod to David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance” with Niles Rodgers inspired production and guitar play. Dave Grohl’s songwriting just continues to improve album after album and is showcased beautifully with album closer “Love Dies Young.” @foofighters

Odette Herald

From time to time, an artist comes along that is rather difficult to pigeonhole to one genre. Odette is that artist. The 23-year-old is often a spoken word artist as such on her debut album To A Stranger but she leans heavily on her gutsy, powerful voice on new album Herald.

There is a huge leap of growth found in Herald from her debut. Odette seems so much more comfortable expressing herself and has no problems sharing her battles with mental health issues with the listener. In the relatable “I Miss You, I’m Sorry” the listener is reminded of how easy it is to be in love with someone while struggling mightily with loving yourself.

Something is about to happen for the Australian singer…hence the album’s title. Herald will have you dancing throughout your home with a song like “Trail By Fire” and before you know it, you’re in the fetal position crying after the first listen of “Foghorn.” @OdettesOdyssey
