Hell of an experience for your boy this week, as I got to cover Super Bowl LV for the first time. Was it because everything was virtual? Sure, probably. But, I don’t care – I’m credentialed media mfs. Now, it’s time to get serious and focus on the game. No more fun questions. Super Bowl week’s media availability is in the books. Here are some of my favorite moments and some more stuff I haven’t really written or tweeted about this week.
Highlights from Super Bowl LV media availability
- Did you guys know that covid effected the 2020 NFL season?
- The Bucs are “playing in their own backyard” and “sleeping in their own beds” this week.
- Byron Leftwich on Tom Brady: “exciting to work with the guy they call the greatest” – He called him ‘aware,’ ‘smart,’ said he’s “been in every situation.” “He wants you to let him know when he’s not doing the right thing.
- Larry Foote on how he survived in the NFL for so long: “it was my play from the neck up.”
- Mike Evans gets tattoos to commemorate big moments in his life. He’ll definitely get the Lombardi Trophy on him somewhere.
- Travis Kelce noted that playing quarterback helped him recognize coverage, added that everything the Chiefs do is predicated on what the defense shows them.
- Kelce acknowledged the fun “rivalry” between he and Gronk, adding that he wanted to win this Super Bowl to get a “tally on the board” in his favor.
- A lot of talk about Eric Bieniemy not getting a head coaching gig for yet another cycle. Rightfully so, there’s no reason for this man to not have a head coaching opportunity.
- On the Bucs defense, Patrick Mahomes said it’s critical for him to get the ball out of his hands quickly, and to get the ball to his play-makers.
- Juan Thornhill on the Chiefs secondary: “we call ourselves DBs,” added that there’s no distinctions between cornerbacks and safeties. Each guy can play each position.
- “I still don’t feel like we’ve put a complete game together.” -Thornhill
- Thornhill on Steve Spagnuolo’s scheme: “it allows everyone to play multiple positions.”
- Really good stuff from Spagnuolo, comparing contemporary NFL defenses to years past: it’s “a product of what’s going on on offense.” He said that with the up tic in passing, there are more pass protections to study, making it difficult to beat. Also noted that more kids are coming into the league having seen a lot more passes because of the current state of the college game.
- Ronald Jones on the dynamic between him and Leonard Fournette: “coaches are doing a great job of managing us both and keeping us fresh.”
- MTSU head coach Rick Stockstill crashed Charvarius Ward’s press conference to wish him well in the game on Sunday.
- Kurt Warner said that the 49ers didn’t know where Tyrann Mathieu was in last year’s Super Bowl.
- Bruce Arians called Mathieu his “favorite draft choice of all time.”
- Frank Clark is a superstar.
- Aaron Stinnie on getting cut by the Titans: “I grew a lot.” Noted he learned a lot from Rodger Saffold.
