The Little Things: 2 out of 5 stars: Each time a Denzel Washington movie comes out, it’s a big deal. It just is. He hasn’t been onscreen since 2018 with his very first sequel, The Equalizer 2, but the wait is finally over. Unfortunately, I could have waited longer knowing what I know now about The Little Things. This marks the first time in a long time that he’s been a part of something that feels pretty pointless in the end.
Co-starring Rami Malek and Jared Leto, the trio of performances are solid, and if it wasn’t for these guys – there would basically be nothing to hold your attention. Washington plays Deputy Sherriff Joe Deacon, who gets mixed up in a series of L.A. murders that resemble one he was investigating five years ago. He teams up with Sgt. Jim Baxter (Malek) to find the killer, and while they seem to be polar opposites, they find out they very well could be one in the same. Their prime suspect is portrayed by Leto – recurrently creepy while assuredly staking claim to being the most intriguing character to watch.
Written and directed by John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side), this irksome throwback crime thriller is outdated and stereotypical. It particularly loves to get our hopes up by consistently making us think that things are about to pick up when they never do. There’s not enough secrets, mind games, or twists in the story to muster up enough suspense to satisfy fans of the genre. Or anyone for that matter.
