Oddsmakers See the AFC South As a Two-Horse Race Between Colts and Titans in 2021

Stoney Keeley weighs in on the AFC South odds for 2021, as oddsmakers think it's going to be a tight race between the Colts and Titans.

Ah, hell – why not? It’s May – we had the schedule release party last night, but otherwise, there’s not a whole hell of a lot else going on. So, let’s take this opportunity to dig into some early 2021 AFC South odds, as the oddsmakers seem to think this is going to be a pretty tight race between the Tennessee Titans and the Indianapolis Colts.

Sports Betting Dime currently has the Colts as the slight favorite in the division at +105, but the Titans aren’t too far behind ’em at +115. Then, there’s a significant drop off to the Jacksonville Jaguars at +800, and the circus that is the Houston Texans at +1500. My opinion is that that’s probably pretty close to what we’ll actually see play out in 2021. I think the Texans could end up being the worst team in the NFL by season’s end. The Jags have the foundation for their future in Trevor Lawrence. They might surprise a few people if Urban Meyer doesn’t tank the ship, but by and large, that roster is still a long way’s away from real contention. So, while I don’t know that either the Titans or Colts improved by leaps and bounds, they’re still relatively close to one another in the AFC South.

For the Colts, the obvious question is whether or not Carson Wentz can find new life in a Colts uniform, reuniting with Frank Reich. We know Jonathan Taylor and that offensive line are going to run with force and power. We know that defense is going to be pretty damn good. But, the questions at the quarterback position are lingering in Indianapolis for another year. If we get more of the Wentz of old, the guy that was once a candidate for MVP, the Colts could be a dangerous team not only in the AFC South, but in the AFC as a whole. For the Titans, it’s all about that defense. The 2020 unit was historically bad on third down, and completely anemic in the pass rush. They beefed up the front seven with Bud Dupree and Denico Autry, as well as completely blowing up their secondary. If the changes work, this Titans team will be a more well-rounded squad than it was in 2020, and they’d be better for it, even if the losses of Corey Davis, Jonnu Smith, and former play-caller Arthur Smith bring the offense back down to Earth a little bit.

Ultimately, as we sit here in May, it really feels like we’re splitting hairs between these two teams, and I think that makes the AFC South odds a total crapshoot. I don’t really think there’s value here for either team right now, so I’m staying away from it until we get a little closer to the season. I do expect the AFC South to be a pretty close race for the second year in a row.
