A Call to Arms in Defense of Dairy Queen’s Food

Stoney Keeley pays homage to the Flamethrower, and Dairy Queen's food in general, in this journalistic essay.

We talk a lot about completely ordinary bar food with the ‘Nashville Reviews’ series on this here website, but we rarely dive into the world of fast food. Well, folks – something happened to me a few weeks ago that has me re-thinking that. I’m going to change that for this essay today – we will indeed talk a bit of fast food. I tweeted something completely innocuous awhile ago that turned into a bit of a rallying cry that took me by surprise. Dairy Queen is obviously known for ice cream – the Blizzard, the monstrous ice cream cakes, milkshakes, the whole nine yards. But, I don’t think they get the credit they deserve for the high quality of fast food that they’re dishing out. I was incredibly relieved to discover that I wasn’t alone in that sentiment.

I remember awhile ago, our buddy Dave at South Atlanta Wrestling asked me what my favorite fast food burger was for an edition of the SoBros Mailbag. I had never really stopped to think about ranking the myriad of fast food burgers that are out there – I mean, I’ve had just about all of ’em, but they kind of blend together to me. When I tried to really contemplate quality and burgers that really stand out from the pack, I kept coming back to Dairy Queen’s Flamethrower – flame-grilled beef patties, pepper jack cheese, fresh lettuce and tomato, jalapeno bacon, and “Flamethrower sauce,” whatever that is. Recently, I found myself ready to chow down on a Flamethrower, when I thought, “y’know what? I need to remind people how they stay sleeping on this burger.”

When I tweeted out the photo, I was surprised and dare I say even inspired, to see the community of fellow Dairy Queen food supporters raise up and quote tweet that with their own take on Dairy Queen’s food. Their burgers really are aces, but they also have some bomb ass chicken fingers. Their basket is alone atop the mountain of chicken finger baskets. Good chicken, excellent fries, Texas toast, and GRAVY to dip it all in. Their onion rings are straight fire, and the perfect complement to a fountain coke.

Everything that Dairy Queen does is completely on point, and I just thought you all should know that today.
