NFL MVP Watch: This Year’s MVP Race Is Wide Open

Who the hell is the MVP of the league right now?

Welcome in to the 2021 NFL MVP Watch, where I will be taking a look around the landscape of the MVP race in the NFL this season. This is pretty much the same thing as my Heisman Watch, sooooo…like, do I want to spend a lot of time on an intro?

Shit, I guess I will for the uninitiated – each week, I will count down the five most MVP-worthy performances of the week and offer up my reasoning for each ranking. You finish first, you get five points. Second is four, so on and so forth. I will keep the season point totals going at the bottom of the article and at the end of the season, whoever has the most points gets the 2021 SoBros Network NFL MVP “honors.”

2021 NFL MVP WATCH: WEEK 10

5. Jeffery Simmons, Titans DT – Simmons is quietly putting together the best interior defensive lineman season in the league right now. We all know the MVP is a quarterback award. They might as well change the name of it, but if we’re talking pure value, a guy that takes on TRIPLE teams along the defensive line warrants some consideration. Right? I’m not crazy, am I? Big Jeff has been a game wrecker this season. On Sunday, he added two more sacks on to his season total, which puts him at 9th in the NFL, most among interior DTs. He’s one of the main catalysts for this defensive resurgence in Tennessee, and because of that, the team is 8-2. 8-2!

4. Jonathan Taylor, Colts RB – No issue whatsoever with Taylor being called the best running back in football with Derrick Henry on the IR right now. He is now tied with Henry atop the NFL in rushing with 937 yards on the season, and is getting red hot for that Colts offense right now. On Sunday, he turned 21 carries into 116 yards and a touchdown.

3. Josh Allen, Bills QB – Allen needed a rebound to get back into the MVP discussion after the poor performance against the Jags, but luckily, the New York Jets were the cure for what ailed him. He went 21/28 for 366 yards, two touchdowns and a pick.

2. Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs QB – He hasn’t been good all season, but he reminded us exactly of what he can be when he is good on Sunday Night Football. In the dominant 41-14 win over the Raiders, Mahomes went 35/50 for 406 yards and five touchdowns. Bonkers.

1. Dak Prescott, Cowboys QB – Is it safe to say that Prescott officially knocked the rust off on Sunday? Don’t get me wrong – I don’t think the Falcons are actually a playoff team, but it looked like Prescott had a much-needed “get right” game, going 24/31 for 296 yards, two passing touchdowns, and a rushing touchdown. He was one of the highest rated passers of the week. And, hey – the way this MVP race is shaking down right now, he has as much claim to the title as anyone else in my opinion.
