First things first, go subscribe to Drinking With… on Apple Podcasts (or wherever you take in your shows for that matter), and check out our catalog of fun episodes as Steven McCash walks us through movies that have surpassed the legal drinking age. Now that you’ve done that (thank you), let’s talk about our latest episode on Shrek.

21 years later and people are still meme-ing Shrek like crazy on the internet. Who would have thought that a nasty, shidding, and farding ogre could become such a beloved figure in American pop culture? And yet, here we are…reliving the start of this beloved franchise on your favorite cocktail-oriented movie podcast.

Upon revisiting this movie, I found that all of the things I remembered loving about it remained intact. At the time, the animation was state of the art. The story was bursting with heart. And, the humor was well-written in a way that allowed the grown-ups to chuckle. Seriously, ‘Lord Farquaad’ has to be essentially calling him ‘Lord Fuckwad,’ right? I’m not the only one that caught that, surely. For all of these reasons, and probably because it made well over a billion dollars as a franchise, Shrek became one of the most iconic and beloved figures in American cinematic history. You’ll hear no arguments from me – and shit, I’m just noticing we haven’t had a Shrek movie since 2010. Isn’t about time this franchise gets a reboot? That’s how things seem to be going in this day and age anyway.
