NFL Teams Heading Towards a Reset

There are six teams in the NFL that look like they're heading towards a bit of aimlessness if they don't make some changes.

We are at that point in the NFL season where we’re starting to see who’s got it, who doesn’t, and who needs to start thinking about a reset. Every year, there are a few teams that make it very clear before the end of the season that they’re in need of a change to really get to the next level. There are a few more that look like they need a total demolition and a rebuild. Blow it all up and build it back. Forget the contenders – let’s talk about the teams out of the race (barring a miracle, of course)!

NFL Teams Heading Towards a Reset

Arizona Cardinals – Well, you can’t reset at the quarterback position because of the massive contract you gave Kyler Murray. I mean, maybe you could trade him, but it sure sounds like Kliff Kingsbury is going to end up being the scapegoat here. Things aren’t clicking for the Cardinals, despite all of the talent on that roster. We keep seeing clips of sideline spats between Kingsbury, Murray, and even DeAndre Hopkins has gotten in on the action! This is the toxic “needs to figure out its locker room” selection on this list.

Carolina Panthers – Man, there’s some talent here and this looks like a scrappy team that isn’t necessarily out of the hunt in the NFC South at 4-8. That’s how bad that division has been. There are some pieces to build around, but they have to get the quarterback position right and they need a coaching staff in there that is in sync with whoever the quarterback of the future may be. Whether they stick with Steve Wilks or not remains to be seen, but this team could be just a franchise quarterback away from being a legit factor in the NFC.

Denver Broncos – I think it’s safe to say at this point that Nathaniel Hackett and Russell Wilson have absolutely bombed in Denver after entering the season as hopeful Super Bowl contenders. That idea is laughable now when you see teammates getting in Wilson’s face on the sideline. That defense is the truth, but they need Wilson and the offense to step up and produce more. Denver might be stuck trying to figure things out with Wilson, so that may mean Hackett is one and done as a head coach in the NFL.

Houston Texans – They have to just tear it all down, right?! I don’t know if it’s tanking or what, but this Texans team completely shit the bed after a competitive start to the season. I thought that Lovie Smith would provide stabilization to the organization, Pep Hamilton would continue the development of Davis Mills, and all of that young talent on defense would show some promise this season. But, it has fallen apart because of Smith’s stubbornness and Mills’ regression. The team started 1-3-1, but played so competitively that it could’ve easily been a 4-1 start and who knows what would’ve happened then? But, by the time we got through the Raiders and Titans games, it just felt like this team was tired of losing and was throwing in the white flag. That’s inexcusable – the Texans need innovation. They need a true franchise quarterback. And, they need a modern defensive mind to corral all that talent. This is an attractive job for someone, but there’s work to do.

Indianapolis Colts – The quarterback woes have finally caught up to the Colts, and what was supposed to be a Super Bowl contender looks like a franchise that is just treading water. The Jeff Saturday hiring has been a punch line on the national talk shows for weeks now, and his inexperience reared its ugly head on Monday night against the Pittsburgh Steelers. No one can successfully get inside the mind of Jim Irsay, so hell, he might think things are going great! But, to me, this offseason screams “reset” for the Colts.

New Orleans Saints – Like the Panthers, the Saints aren’t technically dead yet because they play in the worst division in the NFC. And they have a chance to really mess some things up if they can beat the Bucs this weekend. But, after years of explosive offense under Sean Payton, this team can’t quite figure out how to get good offensive output consistently. They’ve had some high scoring games, sure, but they seem to get stuffed a little too easily by good defenses. This one’s the most subtle submission on this list – the defense has talent, but they need to figure out what they’re going to do at quarterback and run with it if they’re going to get back to the glory days.

The “remains to be seen” category: Las Vegas Raiders, Los Angeles Chargers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The “trending up but still not very good yet” category: Jacksonville Jaguars, Detroit Lions, Atlanta Falcons, Chicago Bears, Pittsburgh Steelers
