Let’s face it – every day we are routinely bombarded with questions. When you’re an emerging media company in Nashville, people just want to know what your opinions are on everything. It’s only natural. And, since our duty is to serve the people, well, we have no choice but to be present. That’s the SoBro Way. Also, aren’t mailbags just a barrel of laughs anyway? Welcome to the newest weekly recurring feature up in this bitch: The SoBros Mailbag. As always, hit us with those mailbag questions @SoBrosNetwork on Twitter, email ’em to me anonymously at thesobrosnetwork@gmail.com. And, holy shit, I need to update this terrible intro paragraph that I’ve been using literally ever since I started writing this column…
Question:
FMK: 1970s Nashville, 1990s Nashville, Modern Nashville
— Outdoor SoBro (@OutdoorSoBro) December 1, 2022
Answer:
This may come as a shock, but I think I’m actually marrying modern Nashville. Yes, I understand that I bitch about modern Nashville left and right on the SoBros Power Hour….but I don’t actually have to go downtown at all. I love the Tennessee Titans….they didn’t exist for most of the 90s and certainly not the 70s. I love the emerging food scene downtown, even though I have to save up for six months to afford a meal down there. I love that friends and family out of town love to come visit here because it is such a travel destination. And, most of all, I love that I can take it all in at my own pace living way outside the city here in Mount Juliet. There’s a lot that keeps me away from downtown these days, but I still love living around Nashville.
I grew up visiting my dad’s paint and body shop in East Nashville in the 1990s….buddy, I ain’t going back there. That was a crazy time when Nashville wasn’t a place you wanted to hang out. I’m killing 90s Nashville for sure.
And, I guess I’ll fuck 70s Nashville because I just don’t know what it was like. Gotta try things out sometimes, am I right?!?!
Question:
In your experience, what’re the best vacation destinations in the south?
— Dom “Warm Beer” Oxenham-Morris (@doxom85) December 1, 2022
Answer:
I actually think the south is a really interesting place with some great spots to travel to. Of course, there’s the obligatory hokey family spots that every southerner grew up going to: Gatlinburg, Daytona, Myrtle Beach, and the redneck riviera, Panama City Beach. While I’m a sucker for a good weekend in the Smoky Mountains, my taste in vacations has matured a bit as I’ve gotten older. I’m a bit of a history buff, so trips to Savannah and St. Augustine have been among my favorites that Aura and I have made recently. I’d put Asheville in the conversation too – it’s a more laid back mountain vibe with one hell of a brewery scene that makes for a fun restful weekend for the beer drinkers out there. Chattanooga is a great weekend getaway, but if you’re looking for a real week-long vacation, you’re probably going to run out of stuff to do after a couple of days (no offense, Chattanooga, I love you). I also once sat at a bar on a beach on Treasure Island just outside of Tampa-St. Pete and watched an entire evening of the NCAA Tournament drinking margaritas and watching the sunset. That felt like paradise to me. So, if you’re asking for my power rankings, I’d go (in order): Gatlinburg, St. Augustine, Asheville, Treasure Island (FL), and Chattanooga.
Question, from my wife on Instagram:
When are you getting a hair cut?
Answer:
I certainly need to get it shaped up here soon so it can grow out evenly, but I actually don’t think I’m going to cut it for a hot minute. I want one more run with the locks before I ride off into the sunset. I need to take advantage of it while I can still grow a decent head of hair. You know I’ll be 37 years old next June….one foot in the grave!
