I feel like I’ve been writing a lot more about Mount Juliet than Nashville here lately, so forgive me. Sometimes, it just works out that way when I’m literally just typing up what’s coming to me. Anyway, I love me some small town Tennessee. I love town squares and general downtown areas. I also love some real peace and quiet. That ‘country roads, take me home‘ shit – I’m on it. But, I’m not all about the in-between. And, that’s where I’ve felt Mount Juliet, Tennessee has resided for the last 15 years. It’s not quite rural enough for the peace and quiet, but they still haven’t built us a proper downtown area.
Well, that could be about to change, as our friends at WKRN have reported plans for “a brand new walkable downtown district with both residential and commercial buildings.” It looks like this developer is building this idea around the need for a new city hall, and if seen through to this vision, it’d be right there where the current city hall and police station is at right there next to the post office. I don’t know how feasible any of this is (reminder: SoBros Network is just a blog and I am not a sourced journalist when it comes to civic matters such as this. My lawyers would be happy to read this.), but it’s high time we started making a push to make Mount Juliet a real city. Everyone knows that you’re not a real city until you have a town square, and Mount Juliet has been without one forever.
I don’t even care that it’ll probably be the same old shit…some apartment buildings and a new Subway (the restaurant, not a literal subway). There won’t be anything to actually do, but it will be cool to mosey about “downtown” Mount Juliet. How cool will we all sound when we’re telling our friends and family that “we’re heading downtown,” when really we just mean a few miles into Mount Juliet?!?! I’m already cracking up at this potential knee-slapper.
Let’s just hope they take it a step further and give us a bona fide town square. Better yet, let’s try and corral some of these craft and clothing boutiques in town and get ’em to open up shops on the square. Maybe we can get Catch 22 to open back up. If city planners really want us to be Williamson County East, we can’t do it without a charming town square like Franklin has. Hey, build us an old theater and maybe the Nashville Film Festival will come here too! The possibilities are endless. I have a feeling this could be the start of something very cool for our little town (or, it could be nothing at all and we forget this was even reported within the next two months’ time).
