There’s all kinds of stuff out there about the global food supply being impacted by sheer number of inhabitants of the Earth, but also from climate change impacting the growth of crops. It’s scary. Quite frankly, I’d just rather not think about it as I stuff my McDouble down my gullet. But, a couple of teams of scientists have recently suggested that one potential solution for this emerging crisis is for us to just start eating bugs. That’s right – if you haven’t already faced this idea, check out this awesome and detailed piece from Forbes before getting back to me.
You’re back? Okay. Let’s dive into this. What do we do here, guys? I want to help fight hunger and save the world and all that. But, doesn’t it seem like we don’t have to go as extreme as eating bugs just yet? I’m not completely shutting the idea down. I’ll do it if I have to. I’m just saying, can’t we start by just cutting back on food? If we all just eat a little bit less at every meal, can’t we just see if things even out after a few months before we just default to eating bugs?
Or, is this one of those things that are already extreme, but we just don’t see it yet? Oh, I’m going to have to be a big brave man for this one. I know it’s socially acceptable to eat bugs in certain parts of the world still. I hear they can actually provide for quite the tasty snack, crickets especially. But, I don’t think I’ve ever had the constitution to try one. There’s some sort of mental blockage there. I like to think I’m a mentally tough enough person when I have to be. I can check the mail in the winter time without wearing a jacket. I’ve accidentally swallowed a bug before. If I can do that and manage, I can take this on. We can do this together.
Let’s just go ahead and change our diets. Since these are scientists suggesting this as an idea, I think it’s safe for us to trust them. That’s the real message of science – do what we said because we’re smart. I’m sure there will be no repercussions to our digestive health. The quicker we do it, the quicker restaurants will start serving bugs, and boom – crisis averted. I’m not sure if it works like other things, but maybe if we eat enough bugs, things will sort of naturally heal themselves and we can go back to not eating bugs. It’s like one of those situations where it’s best to just go ahead and get it over with maybe. We have to save the future here, guys.
