I know good and damn well that frontier living was hell on Earth. Everything around you was trying to kill you, and the life expectancy was around 43 years old for a man. I’d be retired if I was alive back then! Nonetheless, we’ve always highly romanticized this time in our nation’s history with all of the lore, legend, and tall tales that came out of the wild wild west. Maybe that’s just so deeply rooted within me (or maybe it was growing up with all the cowboy shit around me) that I can’t shake the idea that I’d love to travel back in time to poke around and see it for myself.

Dodge City, Kansas is a prime example of this – at its height of infamy, it was a rough town known for playing cards, sleeping around, and shootin’ each other in the streets. There’s no doubt in my mind that I would probably be shot immediately upon arrival at Dodge City…if I even made it there without being scalped. I know that it had to smell like shit back then – nothing but dirt, blood, sweat, and literal shit in the streets. But, I can’t help but entertain the idea of me being the new sheriff in town, riding in to save the day with a pristine handlebar mustache.

Dodge City also has an interesting place in American history because of what it is today. It’s small town Kansas, baby! To be such a hotbed of activity 150 years ago or so, it never developed into a bustling metropolis. Reading about it in Tom Clavin’s book…it reminded me of a frontier version of Las Vegas. As of 2021, Dodge City has a population of 27,690. That’s incredibly small. So, because of my infatuation with this town for one reason or another, Rooster agreed to dive into the history of Dodge City and the American west a little bit with me on our most recent episode of Phone It In.
