Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves
3.5 out of 5 stars
As the writers/directors of Game Night and now this fantabulous, funny fantasy flick – John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein obviously love games and golly do they know how to turn them into a ton of fun. D&D: Honor Among Thieves surprises while slaying with a hefty amount of heart and humor. Fans will no doubt enjoy, but for those who have no idea what terms such as dungeon crawl, crit, tank, nerf, or min-mixing may mean – don’t fret because this kinetic action adventure is for us as well. It’s an infectious good time where those behind and in front of the camera beam with pride whilst championing their inner geek.
A terrific Chris Pine leads a squad of preposterous adventurers who embark on an epic quest to get back his wife and daughter he lost at the hands of greed, betrayal, lies, and those wicked Red Wizards. Pine is the planner and Michelle Rodriguez is the muscle, and they’re fantastic together. Justice Smith as a sorcerer needing confidence and Sophia Lillis’ transformation into a tiefling druid also shine bright. And while I hope to see more of Regé-Jean Page in the sequels (fingers crossed), his limited time with us as Xenk is a true highlight. Then there’s our favorite naughty fellow, Hugh Grant, who can’t not steal a scene. I swear I’ll never get enough of watching him in such sly, sleazy roles. From Paddington 2 to Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen and Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre – he’s been smashing it at being a scoundrel for a while now and continues his hot streak here.
D&D: Honor Among Thieves is a huge and hilarious heist on the surface, but underneath the playfulness and wit is a sweet story about family. It’s accessible, imaginative, and, needless to say, fantastical to a fault. A rousing script, splendid VFX, and charming and charismatic actors playing enchanting characters assemble an astounding DnD world that audiences will want to be a part of for years to come.
