Wes Anderson truly has a style of his own.

You never know what you’re going to get here on SoBros Network, and tomorrow is never promised today. It is within that sort of spirit that our resident film critic, Brandon Vick, and I sat down to record the most recent episode of The Vick’s Flicks Podcast. With Wes Anderson’s new flick, Asteroid City, set to hit theaters next month, and not knowing when we’d get another shot at doing an Anderson podcast, Brandon thought it’d be a good idea to get it in while we can. You never know – the entire Earth may explode next year, and personally, I would rest easier knowing that at least we got our Wes Anderson episode out.

For me, the problem was that I had only seen three of his movies. In order to do this show justice, I had to do my research and I slowly but surely worked my way through the bulk of of his filmography (I still have to get to The Darjeeling Limited and Rushmore). Along the way, I started to realize, “holy shit – I think Wes Anderson might be my favorite filmmaker.” See what The Vick’s Flicks Podcast is doing for the film industry? We’re broadening horizons here. We’re breaking down borders. We’re trying new things. Come along.

As for what it was about Anderson’s movies that drew me in, it’s all style, baby. It’s the complete artistic approach that Anderson takes with his films – from the music, the cinematography, the production design, color and symmetry, and that quirky humor. It’s an artistically immersive experience. I like stuff that I can drown in, and Anderson’s movies are such that you can drown in. Even if the story is a little dragging, there are pretty things to look at, and that’s as simply as I can put it. I could probably watch one of his movies on mute and be perfectly fine with it. I don’t know that I feel that way about any other filmmaker. I like Tarantino and Scorsese, but both of those icons have shit that I find boring. Nolan is good, but the complex nature of his films make it so that you can’t exactly turn your brain off while watching them. I Google the ‘best directors’ and everyone that pops up I’m like “yeah, I don’t know.” I appreciate that Wes Anderson has a style all his own, and if you want to hear Brandon and me dive into his filmography to hear more about that, just smash that play button on the embed below, baby.
