Groomsman Steals Bride’s Big Day

"When you hire a llama to come to your wedding, you have to understand you are going to share top billing..."

One of the biggest struggles in planning a wedding is deciding what to serve at the reception. Couples often debate whether to do a sit down dinner with a full wait staff or to have guest serve themselves through a buffet. Once that is settled and written in ink, the couple then has to decide what they are going to feed their guests. Chicken? Fish? Steak? Oh, do not forget about Aunt Suzy who is vegan this week and Cousin Carl who is allergic to dairy.

One wedding guest a newly married New York couple did have to worry about when it came to dietary restrictions was a very particular and hairy groomsman. J the llama was a special groomsman for Adam and Tara’s wedding and they were more than happy to oblige with his herbivore lifestyle. Yes, you read that correctly – this couple had a freaking llama as a part of their wedding party.

You have probably read about a variety of celebrities that have crashed weddings in the past. Dwayne Johnson and Danny DeVito crashed a couple’s wedding in Cabo San Lucas in 2019, Amy Schumer and Judd Apatow crashed a rather low-key reception in 2015 and even former President Barack Obama found himself playing golf through the wedding of a couple in California once, but perhaps the most famous of celebrity wedding crashers is Tom Hanks. The two-time Oscar winner has found himself inside the weddings of complete strangers on multiple occasions.

When I got married in 2015, I sent invites to a long list of celebrities including Obama, Ellen DeGeneres, and Prince. No one crashed my wedding, but I did receive a nice card from the Obamas and Mouse’s (that’s Mickey and Minnie if you were wondering). I also spent a couple of grand for a professional firework display that was well worth every penny, but for a fraction of that cost, I could have had a freaking llama at my wedding. Maybe next time (just joking, Heather)!

One golden rule of attending a wedding is to NEVER upstage the bride on her big day. Unfortunately when you hire a llama to come to your wedding, you have to understand you are going to share top billing that day and bride Tara was more than happy to. Photographer Cathy Craft told Newsweek “the bride was absolutely delighted and the guests thoroughly enjoyed it as they waited for the ceremony to begin. It put a smile on everyone’s face.”

Including a pet in the ceremony is very common, but having an exotic animal like a llama is not so much but a growing trend that I am more than happy to get behind. My chance of toasting a llama at my wedding has passed me but there is still time for a lot you out there. Llama Adventures located in New York is more than happy to assist you with your llama needs whether it be for a wedding, parade, school event or even bar mitzvah.

In fact, if your upcoming nuptials do not include some sort of badass exotic animal save yourself a stamp and don’t invite me. But if yours does include one, I will happily respond with my plus one and we’ll both have the chicken.
