This is the ultimate ‘angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other story’ man. On one hand, this does feel incredibly exploitative of Maury and it’s difficult to watch someone who clearly has a deep amount of trauma to deal with. But, on the other hand, this is just so fascinating that I can’t turn away. If I’m being honest, I can’t help but laugh at it either. There are parts of it that feel like a Tim Robinson sketch. Also, my moral dilemma is based in the idea that this is actually real life and I’m not 100% sold that it is. But, maybe I’ve just been on the internet for too long. Like, I don’t believe shit that I see on there anymore. So forgive me if I find this lady that was deathly afraid of olives because her grandfather sat up in his coffin and looked at her with olive eyes a little incredible.
Maury was so sick for this when knowing this lady is afraid of olivesđ pic.twitter.com/SXltgmccIP

I mean, I’m not proud of this….but when he authoritatively says “bring out the olives,” and that lady screams bloody murder and runs for her life…I couldn’t help it. I was wheezing I was laughing so hard. I get it – if someone confronted me with my phobia, I’d probably start swinging. Maury’s old ass would’ve had a black eye and a broken rib. But, I also probably wouldn’t have agreed to do the show to begin with.
There’s so much about this video that just feels otherworldly. The way she’s already choking up at just explaining her fear. The people in the crowd laughing at her. Her bruising Maury’s arm because she’s so afraid to let go. That production crew member in the back that was about ready to tackle her when she ran away (I need to know more details about that person’s job because I feel like there are some real stories there). Maury trying not to laugh when he’s talking to this woman. Everyone involved in this has the shame of this incident lingering above them, myself included. Well…obviously, I wasn’t involved in this incident, but I did laugh at it. What are we even doing here, guys? What does this say about ourselves?
I never knew that Maury ran an entire freaking series on people confronting their fears and he went out of his way to find some of the most fucked up shit to address on his show. I don’t know how this made it through the Vine era of the internet without going completely viral. I would’ve thought there would’ve been t-shirts on every shitty website that just said ‘bring out the olives.’ This feels like finding buried treasure in a way.
