It is the morning of the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. If you’re into this sort of thing, you should go subscribe to Stacking The Inbox. There, you can get our 313-page NFL Draft Guide on which Zach and I dig into 275 prospects, complete with ratings of how closely each prospect fits with what we think the Tennessee Titans will be looking for in a prospect, positional rankings, and more! At this point, the hay’s in the barn. For the next three days, I’ll be hopping on shows to react and analyze what’s happening in the best known as the NFL Draft. For now though, I’m going to take a brief moment of zen to catch my breath after the last 10 months of work. Actually, I’m going to take 149 moments to drown out the noise, prop my feet up, and simply enjoy the 2014 Kevin Costner classic, Draft Day.
Is this actually a good movie? Well, it’s been debated on social media, but I’d say if you even have to ask that, you probably have your answer. It almost feels like theatre…an exaggeration of gestures and tone to make sure that even the people in the nosebleeds can see and hear what’s going on. Draft Day somehow took on the task of entertaining us, but also trying to teach casual moviegoers about the inner workings of the NFL Draft, which is such a complicated beast in and of itself. It’s commendable, really. But, I don’t know that their ambition and vision led to an actually good movie.
That’s not why we watch Draft Day, though. We watch Draft Day because today is a holiday, and this is no different than watching Hocus Pocus at Halloween or A Christmas Story at Christmas. The very essence of Draft Day is a celebration of football, the art of the deal, roster engineering, and oh by the way, it happens to star handsome Kevin Costner. THAT is why we watch Draft Day! So, I hope you’ll all get the chance to join me in this celebration, and I hope you’ve got the snacks lined up for the next three days. Here’s to hoping your team doesn’t draft a kicker in the first round!
