The preseason is off to a 1-0 start for the Tennessee Titans after they defeated the San Francisco 49ers 17-13 in the preseason opener on Saturday night. I’m sure we’ll get into the intricacies of this game on Football & Other F Words this week (spoiler alert – that first team defense looked rough), but for now, I wanted to hand out a few game balls for the win.
Preseason Game Balls: Titans-49ers
The starting offensive line – It wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. There were some miscommunications and JC Latham looked like a rookie still working to iron out inconsistencies at times. But, man – as a whole, this unit looked better than just about anything we saw a season ago. Now, you have to be reasonable here and mention that this was against the 49ers backups, but still, an effort that looks much improved compared to a season ago. Peter Skoronski looks like a bull out there, and NPF held his own at right tackle, mirroring the edge in pass pro and scrapping with guys once engaged. Latham had some high quality reps in there, too.

Chance Campbell – The first team inside linebackers left a little to be desired and that might be an understatement. But, Campbell played his ass off once he got into the game. He led the team with nine tackles, navigating traffic and filling run gaps to penetrate and get in the back field. This team is going to need one of these linebackers to step up at one point. Maybe Campbell is that guy.
Jarvis Brownlee Jr. – Brownlee played a ton of reps, and seemed to show that the buzz we’ve heard about in camp can translate to the field. The things I liked about him coming out of Louisville continue to show up on the tape, including this PBU. Notice how he doesn’t panic – instead, he works to get back into the throwing window, forces a difficult catch, and times his punch perfectly to jar that ball loose.

David Martin-Robinson – I would be surprised if the Titans kept more than three tight ends between Chig Okonkwo, Josh Whyle, and Nick Vannett. But, Martin-Robinson made a case for himself Saturday night. From what we’ve heard and seen from camp, he looks like the athletic play-making pass-catcher type. But, Saturday night, he impressed me a few times from a blocking standpoint.
We've talked about David Martin-Robinson being an interesting athletic pass catcher, but how about him motioning into the backfield and throwing this sick block to spring Hassan Haskins here? pic.twitter.com/pLEZLb2yEs
