Poem: The Rite of Spring

'The Rite of Spring' is an original composition from Stoney Keeley honoring the changing of the seasons.

With the weather perking up a bit here in recent weeks, I thought it would be a nice time to share one of my newest original compositions – this is a piece title ‘The Rite of Spring’ that will be featured in my next book of poetry (buy Volumes 1 and 2 on Amazon!).

The Rite of Spring

The opening notes of “Espresso” ring through my 2006 Nissan Altima.
I start it up, with the savory smell of Subway pepperoni in the air.
It’s warm today.
The first time this season it’s been this warm.
Hell yeah,” I say as I roll the window down and allow the fresh spring air to billow through.
I think I’ll take the long way home.
I stopped by the tobacco store only to discover that Backwoods now has fancy cigars.
Backwoods Select, they call it.
Pennsylvania Primo.
What a time to be alive.
The cashier asked me if I was going to actually smoke them.
Of course I am!
I scoffed – what else would I do with a Backwoods cigar?

I turn left onto Central Pike off of Gladeville Road
Light greens rise from the fields on both sides of the road
The sky is undisturbed, pure blue
The occasional flash of pink, white, or purple pops up in my periphery.
I’m heading towards that big hill.
The one where if you drive slow enough
You can see the Nashville skyline in the distance.
No one is behind me, so I can take my time
Enjoy this feeling – a rejuvenation
A rebirth of sorts
What lay dormant for months now bursting with color.
It feels like home
But it feels like something new at the same time.

I see that skyline
The one that I used to look at
And think about what possibilities the night ahead held
I’m older now
But I can still appreciate that impending sense of adventure
That came along with this time of year.
Big Boss Vette speaks up from my playlist
No matter what the fuck these hoes talkin’ bout
Just know you a bad bitch
Every motherfuckin’ time that you wake up
And you look in that motherfuckin’ mirror.”

I thought to myself, “hell yeah, Big Boss Vette”
As I puffed once more on my Pennsylvania Primo.
