I’ll be damned, he did it. In case you’ve been living under a rock the last couple of days, Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry has joined some elite company in rushing for over 2,000 yards on the season. Going into the game, he needed 223 yards on the ground to get there. Typically, you’d consider that a long shot, but not with #22. He could’ve needed 400 yards against that opponent and I’d have been like….”maybe.”
Credit to the Houston Texans for having one of the worst run defenses in the entire NFL. That game was an absolute thriller because of Deshaun Watson literally putting that team on his back, so props to him. But, the king FEASTED on that piss poor defense. Henry got a whopping 34 carries, and turned it into 250 yards and two touchdowns. He finishes his season with 2,027, joining some elite company in NFL history in the 2K club. The King is just the 8th player to do this in the longstanding history of the league.

So, yeah – this happens about once every six years. It ain’t like this is some regular accomplishment. It’s something to behold. Not only did he join the 2K club this season, but he’s also the first running back since LaDainian Tomlinson to win back-to-back NFL rushing titles. If this doesn’t announce his arrival as the best running back in the NFL, I don’t know what will. All due respect to the Cooks and McCaffreys of the world, but no single running back effects games the way Derrick Henry does.
In the 2K club, you have four guys that are already in the Pro Football Hall of Fame (Simpson, Dickerson, Sanders, and Davis). I think there’s an argument for Johnson to get in, but it’s likely that he and Lewis won’t. And, Peterson is a virtual lock to go in once he’s eligible. Sanders, Peterson, and Dickerson are all in the top 10 in rushing yards in NFL history. These are some of the best to ever do it.

Two rushing titles, a membership in the 2K Club – the only things missing are a Super Bowl ring and MVP title at this point. While the odds of the Titans winning a Super Bowl feel astronomical right now given how competitive the AFC is, I actually think there’s a pretty strong case for Henry to win the MVP this year. He won’t – because it’s a quarterback award….but still…you take him off this Titans team, and who knows what that offense will look? He is the cog that makes it go. Austin Huff made a hell of an argument for Henry winning the MVP honors over on Korked Bats. Go check that out.
The case can be made rather convincingly. But, 2020 aside, Henry is climbing up the career charts as well.
He’s 8th among active running backs in career rushing touchdowns with 55. He’s 11th among active running backs in career rushing yards with 5,680 (a mark that also gets him into the top 100 in rushing yards in NFL history). This run he’s been on the last couple of seasons is truly special. A few more seasons of this, and they might have to start finding some space for him in Canton.
