Welcome to the weekly Tennessee Titans draft roundup for the 2020 NFL Draft. Over the course of the next several weeks, I’ll be releasing this column once a week with my very professional journalism opinions. You’ll find everything from rumors to wild speculation to actual analysis (sometimes). Titan up!

*The NFL Draft is going to be held completely virtually through Zoom calls. How weird is that? Is it going to feel like we’re all on some conference call that we’re really not needed on? We all have those at work. You hop on with about 12 other people. You never say a word. In fact, you’re probably doing something else the whole time. Then, you hang up thinking, “that could’ve been an e-mail.” I don’t know – I mean, surely the NFL Draft is going to be a lot more entertaining than that, but it’s going to feel weird as hell.

*I penned out my take on what the Titans need heading into the NFL Draft here. I’m of the opinion that they aren’t married to one position in particular. Instead, this draft ought to be about stockpiling talent on a roster that doesn’t have a whole lot of holes in it.

*It seems like we’ve largely avoided the idea of trading up so far in the draft process. It’s a concept that very rarely works out for the party trading up. But, Ravi Konjeti made a solid case for doing just that for Yetur Gross-Matos over on Titan Sized. Look – I think the Titans need to add another pure pass rusher to the rotation regardless of whether they land Jadeveon Clowney or not. But, if they were sold on getting an elite edge rusher, this might be the only way they do it. Facts are facts, folks – this isn’t a very deep pass rush draft.

If you’re looking for a difference-maker in the mid-to-late rounds, you’re gonna be stuck. Gross-Matos is one of the few guys deserving of the first round grade, but with such a premium being placed on these guys, I highly doubt he’ll be there at #29. So, the logic stands – you want “the guy,” you trade up to get him. The good thing is that he figures to go in the 20s, so I can’t imagine they’d have to sell a kidney to trade up just a few spots. This is the only ‘trading up’ scenario I will support – please adjust your notes accordingly.

*I’ve started digging into C.J. Henderson a bit, and man – so far, I think his combination of size and speed is exactly what the Titans could use in the secondary. He’s big enough to not be out-matched at the NFL level, but most importantly, he has the speed to run with any receiver in the league. Seeing as how Tyreek Hill and that Chiefs offense is the standard-bearer in the AFC now, the Titans neeeeeed to get faster in the secondary.

I don’t get the Trevon Diggs love, at least for the Titans. He’s just way too raw as a corner. I think he’d be best served to go to a team that can afford him the luxury of easing into the NFL and developing.

Up next, I’m going to dig into Jeff Gladney a bit. For some reason, I’m developing a real hard-on for the idea of the Titans getting another corner at #29.

*As it stands, the Titans currently have picks in the 2020 NFL Draft:

  • 1st round, 29th overall
  • 2nd round, 61st overall
  • 3rd round, 93rd overall
  • 5th round, 174th overall
  • 7th round, 224th overall
  • 7th round, 243rd overall

See y’all next week!
