Clea DuVall’s studio backed rom-com that features two gay main characters had the internet buzzing during the Thanksgiving holiday. It was exciting to see onscreen representation within a genre that usually sticks to their cookie cutter leads. While I had some issues with a few of the relationships depicted in Happiest Season, I still enjoyed watching the film.

Here’s my breakdown of the characters in Hulu’s Happiest Season:

Best

1. Jane- This character was obviously meant to play as comedic relief for the audience, but she stole the show. She was the most genuine part of the awful Caldwell brood, and they didn’t deserve to breathe the same air as her. Jane’s storybook ending was the one we all needed after she kept showing up for everyone who never showed up for her.

2. Riley- I’m not sure how a minor character makes a few appearances on screen and completely steals the show, but Aubrey Plaza as Riley did just that. Riley is a part of the same upper class society that the Caldwells are, but she is still very real and sincere. And you know, an actual fun person!

3. Abby- Look, it’s no secret Kristen Stewart can do no wrong in my eyes, and her role as Abby is no different. Abby was willing to put herself in an uncomfortable situation to make sure her girlfriend’s Christmas was picture perfect. She then continued to stay in the situation even after she found out that her girlfriend wasn’t completely honest. Abby was a dedicated partner, but I needed her to stick up for herself a little sooner in this movie.

4. John- When Abby was obviously in holiday hell, John physically showed up like any true friend should. There were some possible mishaps with some fish, but John makes up for it. He was a lifeline for Abby.

Worst

1. Harper- Honestly, I didn’t find one redeeming quality in Mackenzie Davis’ character Harper. She lied to Abby on more than one occasion and never stood up for her or her sisters. Harper has to hide her true self in front of her family, but when you’re steamrolling over the people who care about you then there’s a problem. Abby deserved a better partner.

2. Sloane- Alison Brie was spot on as Harper’s sister Sloane. I love her, but she really knows how to play an unlikeable bitch. Sloane causes the big blowout with the family, and outs someone who isn’t ready to be outed. She’s a big time villain in my book.

3. Tipper and Ted- The parents of the Caldwell children are oblivious to the pain that they’ve caused. They are only concerned about appearances, and positions. In this situation, Tipper and Ted’s neglect actually contributed to Harper becoming such a shit. Luckily, in the spirit of the holidays, they finally come around.
