Quarantine Jams, Vol. 42: Dearly Beloved….

The final edition of Quarantine Jams has arrived, and on it, Steven McCash highlights who believes is the greatest musician of all time, Prince.

When I began making daily playlists, I honestly didn’t think I would make it to 42. As I am hesitantly happy most states are beginning to reopen, I’m still concerned we’re not quite ready yet. Nashville is now in Phase 1 of its reopening with restaurants and retail stores able to open its doors in a limited capacity.

Prince once said that music is the “best medicine in the world” and today the world needs an extra dosage of it. With Nashville taking its first step toward normalcy, it’s safe to say our quarantine is over and therefore, the SoBros Quarantine Jams can come to an end.

The hopefully final playlist is all about who I believe is the greatest musician of all time, Prince. I had the pleasure of seeing Prince live in concert 38 times, not including after show parties and events at his home, Paisley Park. April 21st, 2016 was a dark day for myself and the music world.

I wrote this on Facebook the morning of his passing as I was trying to understand what had happened.

“It was 1982 and a song entered my brain and changed my life forever. Controversy was a song that on surface didn’t make sense to a 7 year old from Memphis, but the lyrics seeped in me and helped me to grow to never judge someone by their race, gender or sexual orientation. I had an amazing family that helped raise me, but it was without a doubt the music, lyrics especially, of Prince Rogers Nelson that taught me how to treat others, demand to be treated, love a woman, stand for things that mattered and so much more.

Years passed but his music was always there to guide me. It was him that helped me get through my mother passing and later my divorce and countless other times. Today I found myself lost, having difficulty breathing and not knowing where to turn. I picked myself up and turned to “The Ladder” from the album Around the World in a Day.

‘Everybody’s looking 4 the ladder
Everybody wants salvation of the soul
The steps u take are no easy road
But the reward is great
4 Those who want 2 go’

I wish when I wake tomorrow, this would have been all a bad dream but that will not be the case. I, along with many others, lost a massive part of themselves today and I greatly appreciate everyone who reached out to me today. Your kind words helped me get through today. I still believe my tombstone will read ‘Here lies Steven McCash, loving husband, friend and the biggest Prince fan all of his friends knew’

Until I see you again my friend.”

I don’t now and have never proclaimed to be the biggest Prince because I know I am not. I’m just someone who found his music at the perfect time in their development and continues on that journey to this day.

I have included my 40 favorite Prince songs on this playlist. Some of these were chart toppers but most are deep tracks and b-sides.
